There's a few games that have attempted a spinoff, but few have been as successful as Doggone probably willꦺ be. The title comes armed wit✤h two secret weapons: petting the dog in VR and input from Xbox head Phil Spencer.
Ever had an itch you couldn’t scratch? So have the developers at Raconteur Games, but it seems they have finally found a way to scratch it. In 2013 the team at the then-upstart game development house was brainstorming about what games should be included in their next multi-game project. One idea that made the final shortlist was a game about a lost dog 🐬trying to find his way home. The fact that several movies feature that exact story points to its appeal, but ultimately the team decided to shelve it. They were bursting with ideas for the lost dog game, and soon realized it was something that needed to be done pro💃per when more resources were available.
Fast forward to 2017, and the timing was right to get started on the dog game, so the team traveled to the Game Developers Conference to start pitching ideas. The game would of course eventually become Doggone, bu♌t the challenge at GDC was getting funding. Despite great interest and helpful feedback, the team just barely missed out on closing an investment deal. Founder and executiveꦜ producer Nick Laborde could have been discouraged by this – however, felt the itch even greater. “I can’t get this out of my heart, we’ve got to make this game…" he recalls thinking. "I don’t know what it is, but we’ve got to keep going.” That's where Phil Spencer came in as a mentor.
How does one get Phil Spencer as a mentor? While at GDC, after pushing for a meeting with Spencer, Laborde asked him if he would be willing to be a mentor, both personally and for the development studio. Phil stopped, looked at Laborde, and said, “Yeah, Sure! It will probably take a while for me to get back to you, but yꦜes!”
Spencer held true to that word with a key o🐠bservation about Doggone. At GDC 2019 the team redoubled their efforts in raising funds, and developing partnerships. Of course, Nick had to try to get on Phil Spencer’s calendar again, but it seemed his schedule was fairly booked. Nick spotted Phil eating lunch, and the gaming icon waved him over, leaving the two to re-engage on the project, and Phil spontaneously asked for a demo of the game. Phil asked thoughtful and deliberate questions, then became stoic, and very seriously asked “Is this going to be like Old Yeller? Because I can𒉰’t do that again.” Raconteur ensures that Spencer, and all of us, will be spared that pain.
So what is the doggone issue here? In reality, there are two ga⛎mes in play. First, the game that is nearly eight years 🌠in the making is . However, in🔯 making a dog game, Raconteur came up against the famous question: “Can you pet the dog?” The issue is that Doggone has you playing as the dog. The team realiz♛ed that petting a dog in 2D꧃ may be slightly underwhelming, so partnered with and to create a VR game aptly titled .
So it l🔜ooks like the itch is well and truly scratched. You can pet the dog virtually, play fetch, throw a ball, or just enjoy the classic Disney-inspired artwork in Doggone and You Can Pet The Dog.
