One big surprise that popped up duriꦰng the Nintendo Direct was the reveal that Donkey Kong Returns is getting ported to the Nintendo ꦕSwitch. Originally announced all the way back in 2010, the first Donkey Kong Returns game was considered a massive hit and part of what brought the iconic gorilla back to the forefront.

Donkey Kong Returns HD Is Coming Next Year

Well, that career-restarter is finally getting the respect it deserves, as it was announced during the most recent Nintendo Direct that . The trailer didn't reveal too much about the game and what's going to be added to it, but we do at least know that it's going to be releasing on January 16, 2025.

Aside from that, it seems that the main thing that the remaster does is improve the graphics, which is perhaps most noticeable when it comes to Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong's fur. It's likely that a few new levels and features will also be chucked in, just like we saw for the remaster of Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze.

Fingers crossed 🍃that Funky K🦩ong gets added into this HD remaster as well...

Donkey Kong is in a pretty odd spot at the moment, as despite being one of Nintendo's biggest characters (literally and metaphorically), we haven't had a new game for over a decade. He's been in pretty much every Mario spinoff conceived, but when it comes to mainline titles that star the monkey himself, you have to go all the way back to the release of Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze in 2014. Mario vs Donkey Kong doesn't count.
