In a surprise trailer today, Bethesda announced that it will be following up id Software's excellent sequel with The Ancient Gods, a two-part add-on that will bridge the gap between Doom 2016 and this year's installment.
Ever the marketing geniuses, Bethesda will be holding a full reveal for this first part on August 27, 2020, at Opening Night Live (). For now, we simply have a 30-second clip that gives us short glimpses of gameplay. It...definitely is Doom Eternal, that's for certain.
For anyone with knowledge of Doom's lore, there is a lot to unpack here. Speculation before this reveal was that we'd travel to a few locations mentioned/seen in Eternal and that has come to fruition. This expansion will like﷽ly explain how the Slayer acquired the Fortress of Doom and started his crusade to rid Earth of the demon spawn.
There's also a shot of something that looks like the , which served as a boss fight in Eternal. Her hatred foꦓr the Slayer is probably because of his actions here. We honestly don't knowไ much else, but it's certainly food for thought.
