Ammo is is incredibly scarce, especially in the early hours of the game when you have few weapons and even fewer upgrades. DOOM Eternal is an entirely different beast than DOOM (2016), it's a game that rewards smart play and using the right tool for the job. If you're s❀truggling with adapting to the new combat, here are some tips to help you stay on 🌠top and keep Hell's forces under your boot.
Obey The Chainsaw
The chainsaw is your prim🦹ary tool for refilling ammo in battle. It has a maximum of three charౠges that are refilled by collecting gas can spread around each arena. It's important to note, however, that an empty chainsaw will refill one charge over time, even if you don't pick up any gas cans. Don't worry about conserving you chainsaw ammo. If you need to use a specific gun, even if you're other guns are full, don't hesitate to use your chainsaw.
Minor demons cost one🃏 charge to chainsaw. That includes zombies, imps, and gargoyles. Larger demons cost all three charges so it's really not recommended to use the chainsaw on them as they don't drop any additional ammo. Unless you're really stuck in a particular encounter and need the ista-kill, try to only use your chainsaw on the zombies stumbling around.
If you have𝐆 the charges, you can chainsaw twice in a row to fill all of your guns almost completely. This is a good strategy if you need lots of chaingun ammo for a Tyrant of Pain Elemental.
Focus Your Sentinel Crystal Upgrades
Every Sentinel Crystal provides an upgrade to either health, armor, or ammo. Of the 12 upgrades 🎉available, four of them will increase your maximum ammo capacity. If you're really struggling to keep your guns loaded there's nothing wroಞng with spending your first for Sentinel Crystal upgrades on ammo.
The Sentinel Crystal upgrades each represent half of a bigger upgrade. Each ability unlocks by purchasing both of the upgrades attached to it. There aren't any with two ammo upgrades, so it may seem disadvantageous to forgo these bonuses for the sake of ammo. Taking a closer look though, there really isn't anything essential here. Belch Armor Boost is probably the most important one, but it doesn'▨t become an essential upgrade until very late in the game. Take the ammo perks early if survivabilityꦡ isn't as big of a priority.
Be Efficient
Unloading the entirety of your Heavy Cannon into a pinky's face isn't going to do much to the pinky, and it certainly isn't going to help you conserve ammo. Likewise, using Ballista to pick off imps at range is a pretty big waste of ballista ammo. The combat in DOOM Eternal is centered around each demon's specific weakness, and it's imperative to capitalize on those🔯 weaknesses conserve ammo and win battles.
One of the first tricks you learn is blowing the gun off an arachnotron with a precision shot. The Ballista and the Heavy Cannon with the Precision Bolt mod are the best weapons to use against arachnotrons. One of the runes, Chrono Strike, allows you to slow down time in the air by holding right-click/left trigger. This is an indispensable perk for hitting weak spots with the Heavy Cannon. The same strategy can ✱be applied to the arm cannons on a mancubus, the shoulder cannons on a revenant, and the heads of Maykr Drones.
Slippering enemies can be auto-targeted with the Lock-on Burst mod for the Rocket Launcher, the Micro Missile mod for the Heavy Cannon, and the grappling hook on the Super Shotgun. Use these weapons to make short work of whiplashes, gargoyles, and prowlers befo𒁏re they can teleport aw♍ay from you.
For the big boys, nothing beats the Mobile Turret mod for the Chaingun. The chaingun absolutely shreds archviles, barons, and the sleds on doom hunters. Keep in mind that the Chaingun shares ammo with the Heavy Cannon, so once you run out a good alternative is th🍎e Ballista with the Arbalest mod. This mod does massive single target damage and is great for hitting/staggering super heavy demons at long range.
Just Git Gud
DOOM Eternal is a much harder game than DOOM (2016) and some people are already turned off by the added layers of combat. If you're willing to learn the fights though, DOOM Eternal is an exceptionally more rewarding game than🐭 🦹its predecessor.
Encounters are meant to be r🍸epeated, at least on the higher difficulties, and failure is a big part of mastery. All the tools at the Doom Slayer's disposal- guns, grenades, flamethrower, and abilities like Blood Punch and Glory Kills, need to be used in almost every fight. Dashing into a crowd to Glory Kills a staggered imp and then blood punching the mancubus next to him to set off a deadly AOE and kill everything around you is an incredibly useful combo for conserving ammo and thinning out the hordes of demons in each arena. You need to learn when to use all the tools and use them often to beat back the forces of hell. It takes practice, but once you figure out the flow of combat it's incredibly satisfying.
