Quick Links
There have been a lot of Doom games over the years, and the series has only gotten better as it's gone along. Those who haven't played the games might assume that each new release, espe🍒cially Doom 2016, was just a remake of the original, albeit with improved graphics, new monsters, and more ♉features.
But there is an over-arcing stor🦋y to the series that interweaves a grand narrative of id Software games and creates a dense and interesting timeline across two video game universes. There's a lot of information to trawl through, but here’s a condensed look at the timeline of the Doom games and how they’re all connected.
Are All The Doom Games Connected?
To start things off, yes, all the Doom games are connected, or at least are part of parallel timelines and alternate universes. Each game is part of an ongoing story of the Blazkowicz family (yes THAT one) and their heroic battles with evil. Be it Nazis in 🍬Wolfenstein or in the case of Doom, the iꦐnnumerable forces of Hell.
, several id Software games are connected, and every Doom Guy originates from Commander Keen, who in turn is the grandson of William J. Blazkowicz, the protagonist of the original Wolfenstein. Which makes each Doom Marine a Blazkowicz family member in one sha🔴pe or form, be that grandson, great-grandson, cousin, or, in one case, clone. They've been doing the family business of kicking ass for a long time.
Though the Doom games are set in the far future, and a few spin-offs are considered to be non-canon, the overall story you can piece together is pretty interesting. It portrays an ancient inter-dimensional war with 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Hell's demons, humanity's hubris, and the machinations of a malevolent alien race seeking to extend their own sickly lifespans through the manipulation of the𝓡 souls of countless planets in the universe.
The Timeline
Though the story of Doom is one that’s eons in the making, the general plot of the games can be tied down to a g♉eneral narrative that spans multiple ᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚgames. Though there’s some debate around the accuracy as certain timelines have been retconned, reworked, and rebooted, there are some pretty solid theories.
A lot of them are based on🤡 the similarities the games have had over the years, and with that there can be woven from both of them a story that bring a little or⛄der to the somewhat disjointed mess. So here’s the general timeline of the Doom series laid out.
What Is Argent Energy?
A brief pit-stop before the information dump, it's worth mentioning Argent Energy. Everything in the Doom timeline can be tied back to it and the need for it, but what is Ar꧂gent Energy?
Argent Energy, is a form of pollution-free, renewable energy that was discovered by the UAC in the 21st Century. But in reality, it has been around for millions of years in a raw and more dark form before humanity got its hands on it. As it turns out, this free environmentally friendly energy source, like Soylent Green, is made from people, or rather the Souls of the damned to be exact.
When a mortal soul is sent toꦗ Hell, the suffering they experience creates miasmatic energy, which✅ the legions of the damned feed off. Though the process takes several years, it was discovered that if these damned souls were combined with Sentinel Energy, which itself is harvested from torturing captured Wraiths from Argent D’Nur, it would create Argent Energy.
Over time, it was found that taking live humans and harvesting their souls directly was not only more efficient, but the discarded husks would also eventually transform into Demons, benefiting Hell's constant need for a growing legion. The discovery of this nightmarish production method for the so-called miracle power source is what ignited the Civil War on the Argent D’Nur homeworld.
The Beginning
Though the events of the Doom games are set in the far future, the seeds of chaos were first planted millions of years ago on a planet known as Argent D’Nur, the home of the Argenta, or "Sentinels" as they’re more commonly known. Eons ago their world was a lifeless husk, until a gigantic crystaline object called the World Spear smashed into it, piercing it from each pole and tearing the planet asunder.
Eldritch creatures known as Wraiths, beings of immense power, would soon appear, seeding life to the planet and becoming worshipped by its warrior society inhabitants generations later. The symbiosis of two species would prosper for thousands of years before eventually encountering a highly advanced alien ღrace known as the Maykrs. Led by the Khan Maykr, they came bearing tithes of friendship and the promise of access to an afterlife in the realm of Urdak.
The Sentinel Civil War
The💮 two great races worked together well, conquering vast swathes of space and creating a grand empire that would achieve magnificent things. Achievements such as discovering Argent Energy, a seemingly infinite and extremely powerful energy source that was found during a brief war with demons from the Hell dimension.
Though as time went on, the dark and horrific truth about this new miracle fuel would come to light, fracturing the Empire and igniting a vast civil war. It was during this conflict that a time-traveling Doom Marine would appear amongst their midst. But despite his best efforts, those that were loyal to the Wraiths were obliterated, with vast swathes of the Argenta homeworld pulled into the Hell dimension.
After the war, only the Maykrs' true believers were left alive, and the Doom Marine was entombed within the🌊 depths of Hell, later to be recovered prior to the events of Doom 2016. The Maykrs that survived would continue to spread their message of an afterlife and the dark blessings of Argent Energy onto the rest of the galaxy, relatively uncontested until they eventually came across Earth.
The Rise Of The UAC
Scooting ahead a few millennia to Earth, the human race has flourished and plans for the colonization of Mars in 2049 were well underway thanks to the efforts of Dr. Samuel Hayden and the Union Aerospace Corporation o𒀰r "UAC". A new civilization is established on the far-off colony, and in the decades that follow great scientific breakthroughs would be made.
Eventually in 2095, Argent Plasma would be discovered in fissures within Mars, becoming the human race's first interaction with the ancient Argent Energy. Later the Colony would discover the Soul Cube, a bizarre artifact from Hell along with stone tablets created by the previous (now extinct) Martian civilization. These inscriptions would lead Dr. Hayden to The Well, the source of all Hell's energy, and where Argent Energy was first refined by the Argenta.
By 2127, the Argent Tower would be completed, allowing for the siphoning from The Well and the conversion of Hell Energy into a new Argent Energy power source which, just as it did with the Argenta, skyrocketed the Human race's capabilitie꧋s for scientific breakthroughs.
Doom 3
Things seemed to be going smoothly for the UAC, they now provided the sole source of energy for Earth, had various military contracts, and were regularly churning out new 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:advancements in technology. By 2144, they had discovered a way into Hell and were regularly sending in expeditions to recover creatures and artifacts.
Led by a now Cybernetic Hayden who had long shed his mortal form, gaining immortality in a new robotic body. A year later the first manned expedition retrieves the sarcophagus of the Doom Slayer, albeit with the death of the entire team from De🍨mons. Then a month later an experiment in one of the labs triggers a cascade event which results in the first full-scale invasion of the colony by the minions of Hell.
Doom 3 portrays these nightmarish events (in a possible alternate dimension) as it follows an unnamed marine in Bravo Team that’s sent to Mars just as Hell invades. After the first incursion, things quickly returned to normal, and expeditions into Hell's depths continued, with remains of Imps and Hell Knights regularly recovered. Though these trips came with a high cost of expedition members, there were always so many more willing replacements eager to jump into the jaws of Hell for science.
Doom And Doom II
Though the forces of Hell were driven back, their influence remained as strange phenomena began to occur throughout the Martian colonies, escalating in scale over months. What started with strange noises quickly became worse as mysterious suicides and unexplainable disappearances rose, whilst outbreaks of unexplaꦅinable random violence became common throughout the labs. Though these events would be swiftly covered up by the UAC, eventually the majority of staff on the sites began to file their concerns about the situation and despite nothing being done about it, the concerns about Hell's contamination of the colony became common knowledge.
By November of that same year in 2145, the Doom Marine (Doom and Doom II) would arrive on Mars, sent there as punishment for assaulting a Superior Officer that ordered his squad to fire on civilians. From there the events of the first two games unfold with another unnamed soldier battling a second and third incursion of Hell on Mars.
Worth noting is that other games in the series by this point are seemingly considered by the Doom Community to be set on alternate Earths with similar timelines, and since their plots are alike it's acceptable to put them under the wider brush of the larꦍger ongoing story.
What Happened To Doom Guy?
During the events of Doom and Doom🔯 II, the Doom Marine regularly♛ goes into and out of Hell, taking down the various minions and monstrosities it can throw at him.
Eventually, he would become trapped there, endlessly fighting off waves upon waves of Demons before emerging millions of years in the past on the planet of Argent D’Nur. There he was found wounded by the Sentinels and after proving his worth in the Gladiatorial arena he would lead the charge on Hell's legions during the Civil War, slowly becoming mute and going mad with rage after🌱 years of violence and earning the title of Doom Slayer.
After a great betrayal within the Night Sentinels whilst he led a strike mission into Hell, he would later become entombed with𓃲in 🦹a demonic sarcophagus and released again in Doom 2016.
Pre-Doom 2016
With normality seemingly returning to Mars again, the Doom Slayer savior mysteriously missing, and the soldier from Doom 3 reassigned elsewhere, the UAC swept it all under the rug once more as they went bacಞk to business as usual.
By 2148, the UAC were still not learning from past mistakes, sending regular expeditions into the depths of Hell. Mars had been accident-free for years until 2149 when the Doom Marine, now Doom Slayer, would escape from his sarcophagus to find the colony once again under attack from the forces of Hell.
Doom 2016
During the events of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Doom 2016, the incursion of demons this time is because of the machinations of Dr. Olivia Pierce, who used the colony's Argent Energy supply to permanently tear open a portal to hell after they promised a solution to a rare genetic condition she suffered from after years of exposure to Hell energy, an affliction that caused her to live in constant pain and agony, unable to walk without the assistance of a special exoskeletal suit. Though it would turn out she was merely a puppet of Hell's greater host, she would later be transformed into a Spider Mastermind for her efforts before being brutally destroyed by the Doom Slayer.
The demon incursion is quickly put down again thanks to the efforts of the awakened Slayer and a tenuous alliance with Dr.ꦕ Samuel Hayden. After the dark discovery of the secret of Argent Energy, the Doom Slayer would also destroy the colony's siphoning tower, cutting humanity off from this corrupted element and singular energy supply, plunging the world into darkness by the end of the game.
Using an artifact known as The Crucible, Doomguy destroys The Well once and for all, cutting off Argent Energy for both Hell, Earth and whoever else was siphoning it off. He is later betrayed by Hayden, who took the Crucible for himself, citing that great research and scientific breakthroughs could be made with the last source of Argent Energy in the solar system. Dr. Hayden, clearly still learning nothing from his past🅘 mistakes, teleports the Slayer off to an unknown location and the start of Doom Eternal.
(SPOILER WARNING)
Doom Eternal
Though the forces of the damned legion of Hell were dealt a substantial blow by the Doom Slayer, it was not enough to stem the endless tide. Their last little battle had weakened the dimensions, and so they were easily able to breaking through to the universe once more, swiftly overrunning Earth, wiping out around 60 percent of the planet's population, who were now almost defenseless after losing their supply of Argent Energy.
What remained of humanity fled to space, joined the now fully corrupt UAC, or signed up with the resistance group ARC.ജ The world became a warzone and playground for demons, that is until the Slayer steps in once more from onboard his orbiting sanctuar༺y.
After discovering a plot by the Maykrs and their leader that was centuries in the making and involved sacrificing the remains of mankind, Doomguy hunts down numerous Priests of Hell that the Khan Maykr allied with. As those events unfold it’s found out that the plan was to harvest the souls of the human race by destroying Earth, and in the process procuring more Argent Energy that could be siphoned off by the Maykrs. This was to ensure that in their own dimension, their homeworld Ur🐼dak could survive.
After the awakening of the Icon of Sin, a giant bestial demon, the legions of the Damned would break their pact by invading Urdak. After a climactic battle, the Khan Maykr is defꦰeated and the Icon of Sin destroyed, putting an end to Hell's invasion once again.
The Ancient Gods: Part One
After the events of Doom Eternal, the war was still not over. With the conquering of Urdak by Hell and little to🀅 no Maykr resistance to keep them in check, the damned legions would begin to dominate every dimension, eventually finding a way onto 🀅Earth once again.
The Doom Slayer, seeking a solution to the eternal war, sets out with another uneasy alliance with Dr. Samuel Hayden to recover 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the Seraphim, a Maykr known as Samur Maykr that followed the species creator God, The Father. Using a Life Sphere, essentially a storage device or prison for a deific Soul, the plan was to resurrect The Father, and use his power to restore order to the solar system. It would later be revealed that Hayden and Samur were one and the same, a consciousness split long ago.
After retrieving and then destroying The Father's life sphere as it would mean the Maykrs would just start their twisted soul-collecting schemes all over again, the Doom Slayer retrieves the Life Sphere of the Dark Lord instead and sets off for Urdak once again. If the Slayer brings back the Dark Lord from the Life Sphere and then kills him, all demons would perish.
Ancient Gods: Part Two
The Dark Lord manifests but appears as a copy of the Doom Slayer before taunting him for a final confrontation in the eternal Maykr city of Immora before teleporting him away once again. After rallying what remains of the Night Sentinels, the Slayer eventually defeats the Dark Lord, who reveals that he is the real Father of the Maykrs as every Demon across the multiple dimensions disappears.
The Slayer then falls unconscious as he’s entombed within a Sarcopha𓆉gus once more, this time by three Maykrs, his fate unknown until the next piece💧 of DLC or new game.
