The Introduction And Attack

Dragon Age Inquisition - army attacking Haven

At the beginning of this quest, you successfully close the Breach — though it isn't entirely healed and a scar remains in the sky. However, this is plenty of reason to celebrate! Throughout Haven, people are dancing around campfires, singing, eating, and drinking... that is, until an army begins its assault on the little village. If y♎ou recruited the mages to the Inquisition, the Templars will be attacking, a💫nd vice versa.

You'll be prompted to head towards Haven's main gate. As you pass the townspeople, it may be worth noting where the named NPCs are, as you'll need to rescue them later and they'll be in approximately the same place. Once you do reach the gate, you'll either be greeted by Dorian or Cole (whoever you haven't met already) and they'll explain that the mages or templars have become corrupted.

The Trebuchets

via guides.gamepressure.com

You'll need to man Haven's trebuchets and keep the army at bay.

  • The first one you approach is the northern trebuchet. There's a crew of workers there trying to fire it, but they're being overwhelmed by opponents. You'll need to defeat three waves of these enemies before they're ready to fire — you'll be able to track your progress via a gauge onscreen.

Tip: Throughout this mission, there are "supply caches" scattered around Haven so that you have consistent access to health potions. There's one available at the northern trebuchet, but try not to take it yet. You'll be back to this area later for a harder fight and will probably need it then.

  • Once the northern trebuchet has fired, you'll be asked to help out another one that isn't firing. Before you leave this area, though, be sure to loot all the dead bodies — they'll despawn once you're gone.

  • Once you reach the other, southern trebuchet, you'll realize that the people manning it have been killed and it's now swarming with enemies.
  • As soon as those opponents are dead another wave will appear, so don't let your guard down too quickly.
  • If you need it, there's a supply cache on the right-hand side of the trebuchet (no need to save this one for later).
  • Now that there are no enemies in your way, man the trebuchet yourself! There's a wheel to turn on the side and turning it causes a gauge to appear. Once that's full, it'll fire and cause an avalanche.

Heading Back To The Chantry

Dragon Age Inquisition - Chantry in Haven
via @Lozz_Logan on Twitter

ꩵNext,🐬 a Dragon will destroy the trebuchet and you must retreat.

Tip: Save after the dragon's cutscene plays to avoid redoing too much of the mission.

  • During your trek back, you'll be faced with several townspeople in distress. When you get close enough, a quest goal will be added to your list. There are six goals in total for saving seven people.
  • Anyone you save will continue to work for the Inquisition, but those you choose not to help or rescue will die and their job will be done by someone new from here on out. It's tricky but entirely possible to save everyone (and, if you pull it off, it earns extra approval from Varric and Vivienne on top of the experience and influence it already provides).

If you do want to save everyone...

  • Proceed with caution — once the quest goal for a person's rescue has been added to your log, there's a time limit before they die of their unfortunate circumstances. However, there's no limit to the amount of time between rescues.
  • Save after each successful rescue to avoid having to redo them all if you mess one up.

Optional: Help Harritt

via xenocell.com
  • As you head back towards the gates, you'll pass Harrit the Blacksmith.
  • He calls out to you for help and explains that he needs to get inside a nearby building; its door is blocked by toppled wooden boxes.
  • If you choose to help him, just use a weapon or spell (anything explosive is bound to work) to destroy the boxes for him.

Optional: Rescue Lysette

via IGN
  • The quest goal to "rescue Lysette" is automatically gained after the cutscene plays where Cullen closes the gates.
  • To help her, climb the stairs you're on and turn right immediately — she's fighting enemies past the wall made of spiky wooden logs.

Note: Lysette is actually an exception to the rule; being a strong warrior in her own right, if you don't help her, she still survives the mission.

Optional: Rescue Seggrit

Dragon Age Inquisition - Rescuing Seggrit
via Stu Hayhoe on YouTube
  • After helping Lysette, turn back towards the way you came and then go right to climb up Haven's main set of stairs — be careful to stick to the left-hand side.
  • When you see the campfire where Varric usually hangs out, turn left.
  • There are a group of enemies waiting at the top of the stairs for you; ideally, by staying far enough left, you won't aggro them. If they do notice you, just order your companions to fight while you do the rescuing.
  • Seggrit is inside of a burning building and can't get out because of boxes blocking the door — just like Harritt, except that the boxes are on the inside this time. There are several ways to successfully rescue Seggrit.
  • First, it's possible to break the boxes from the outside of the house by attacking the door with Mind Blast (for a mage), Explosive Shot (for a rogue), or Charging Bull (for a warrior).
  • The intended way, though, is for you to find a way into the building by climbing up to the roof. The simplest method is by looking to the left of the building for a ladder; there's a small path created by falling debris that will allow you to jump inside the burning building, rescue Seggrit, and then bust open the front door.

Optional: Rescue Flissa

Dragon Age Inquisition - Rescuing Flissa
via DAfan7711.tumblr.com
  • Flissa can be found across the road from where Seggrit was. You want to do Seggrit first because Flissa's rescue, while not very confusing, does have a very short time frame once activated.
  • When you're ready (or when you notice that you've triggered it) make a beeline for the tavern.
  • Inside, Flissa is lying on the ground unconscious — just hold the appropriate button and revive her before the burning roof comes crashing down!

Tip: To ensure you don't prematurely activate the quest objective to save Adan and Minaeve, leave through the Tavern's front door, not the one that Flissa was close to.

Optional: Rescue Adan and Minaeve

Dragon Age Inquisition - Rescuing Minaeve
via DAfan7711.tumblr.com

If you hadn't already finished off the enemies that attacked you by the tavern, do that now to ensure you aren't being bothered for the next part.

  • Adan and Minaeve have to both be rescued in the time you'd usually have to rescue just one person. It's by far the toughest save.
  • To get to them, leave the tavern and head away from Varric's campfire towards the part of the map where Solas would stand.

Tip: To make sure you aren't bumping into your companions in this small space, consider ordering them to stay at the bottom of the stairs.

  • The dragon's fire will hit nearby, causing Adan to scream about the pots. You might think he's finally lost it, but it's because these pots are flammable and will explode when the fire reaches them.
  • Ideally, you'll reach both Adan and Minaeve before that happens, but start with Adan — there's a (small) chance that Minaeve will survive the blast and you'll be able to rescue her after.

Tip: If you're really having trouble reaching Minaeve in time, consider ordering a companion to stand next to her. Then, once you've revived Adan, you can take control of that character and save Minaeve instantly.

Optional: Rescue Threnn

Dragon Age Inquisition - Rescuing Threnn
via Bricks and Seven on YouTube
  • For the final save, just keep pushing towards the Chantry.
  • When you arrive, Threnn will be there with her weapon drawn.
  • Before entering the Chantry, just help Threnn with the opponents she's dealing with.
  • Once they're all dead, Threnn will say "she didn't expect this" and thank you before finding shelter.

Now, you're safe to proceed inside the Chantry and continue the quest!

The Final Trebuchet

Dragon Age Inquisition - Cullen in cutscene talking to male human inquisitor

During the last stretch of this mission, you must draw attention away from the escaping townspeople by attacking with the trebuchet again.

  • Push through the opponents to reach the trebuchet again.
  • This time, aiming it yourself will be considerably harder. Once you begin to turn the wheel, enemies will appear.
  • Let your party members keep them off you at first and turn the wheel as far as it will go.
  • Once it stops, help your companions defeat the wave of opponents. You'll need to do this process a total of three times before you can fire the trebuchet.
  • The third and final wave is particularly tough because it will contain a mini-boss; either Knight-Captain Denam or Fiona, depending on which group you chose to recruit.

Tip: Take out the smaller opponents before dealing with Denam or Fiona.

Dragon Age Inquisition - Corypheus

As soon as the trebuchet has been aimed correctly, you'll be pulled into a cutscene and get a chance to talk to the Elder One. After an impressive final line, you fire the trebuchet and cover the town in snow.

Pushing Through The Snow

via Grihan Plays! on YouTube

Your character will awake in a freezing underground cavern. Your abilities and movement speed will be affected — when you're faced with a group of demons who attack, you'll be met with a tutorial about a new game mechanic: Focus Abilities.

Exit the cave and keep pushing forward. There are a few campfires you can interact with, but it's not necessary. Eventually, soldiers led by Cullen will find you shambling about.

Determining The Herald's Belief

Dragon Age Inquisition - an elven Inquisitor and Mother Giselle
via dumpeddrunkanddalish.com

In the next few cutscenes, you'll talk with people about what to do next and the state of your organization. The conversation you have with Mother Giselle is set up to establish whether or not your Inquisitor believes in the Maker. It is significantly impacted by whether or not you have espoused faith in the Maker up until this point in conversations with Cassandra, Leliana, and Chancellor 🌱Roderick (those conversations are used ♉to interpret your words now).

Mother Giselle will say "... he earned the scorn of the Maker. I know I could not bear such."
