This has made many believe Orlais is a Meritocracy, which is to hold power based on ability rather than blood and wealth.
However, this is wrong. According to The World of Thedas books, the faint hope to be among nobles one day just helps keep the poor ♛dream🤡ing while the rich get richer.

Antiva is one of the few nations of Thedas that is not ruled by a monarchy. It is a plutocracy, so it is not ruled bloodlines or ability. It is simply ruled by whoever is🐽 the richest. This makes more sense when one considers that Antiva's basically started out as a nation of pirates.
While a monarchy does exist, it serves as a symbol rather than a utility. The real power is in the hands of merchant princes who have made the nation known for its neutrality, aggre൲ssive tradiꦦng practices, and luxury.
4 Every🎐 City-State Of The Free Marches Has A Unique Type Gover🗹nment
The Free Marches are an umbrella term for city-states that each have their own form of government. What fans most know about is Kirkwall, the setting of Dragon Age II. Kirkwall is ruled by a Viscount (though some would argue it is more 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:ruled by Templars).
Another city-state is Starkhaven which is ruled under the Vaels as a monarchy. However, mos🧔t of ꦬthat family got assassinated as many desire the throne.

Someone of high social standing in Ferelden is not someone you would find in the countryside away from society. Those with any authority in Ferelden are often in the center of towns and cities. The history of Nevarra has had๊ three royal Dynasties. First was the Pentaghast, then Markham, and then Pentaghast again. Markham overthrew the Pentaghast family back when Nevarra was pretty small. Under his rule, Nevarra became a full-fledged nation rather than a city-state.
However the Markhams died ou🌊t in the Steel Age with no sons. A daughter married a Pentaghast, joining the two powerful families.
