While far from perfect (and it is indeed far from perfect,) Kakarot is a major step forwa⛎rd for a franchise that often stꦛruggles with its presentation on the video game side of things.
More importantly, Kakarot brings Dragon Ball back to its video game roots, really capitalizing on the RPG-ness of it all. Naturally, this results in a game with plenty of playable characters and party members. As Kakarot is an adaptation of Dragon Ball Z specifically, however, this means there aren’t 💙many natural opportunities for au🅠diences to actually make use of their party members.
Not just that, character availability in Kakarot is downright awful at times. Beyond just the playable characters who come and go like the wind, party members barely have a role to play half the time. What few party members who actually play an active role in the story aren’t going to accomplish much without grinding, but certain characterܫs can pull their weight for a while.
6 Android 18 🔴
It’s nice as a party member, but she’s a perfect example of Kakarot’s utterly thoughtless game design at times. Despite being an active supporting character during the early half of the Boo arc (even fighting,) she does not get to be a party member until afte🐬r players beat the game.
What’s crazy is that Android 18 could have very easily been a party member for one of the Cell fights, or just usable in the party during the Intermission between the Cell and Boo arcs. If nothing else, she should have been usable as a party member once before the en of the game. As is, there’s little reason why Android 18 is playable at all. Kakarot doesn’❀t have a meaty post-game, and her coming so late means players will have no incentive to train or use her when they have upgraded party members.
5 ꦆ Kid Trunks & Goten
Trunks and Goten essentially fill the same support roles once they’re unlocked: do damage fast. Goten in particular can fire off Kamehamehas (not a typo) like a monster. He ca🎶n fire out Ki so rapidly, that many are tempted to put Goten in their party immediately. Taking into consideration the party bonus for having a team of Goku, Goten, and Gohan, it makes sense.
Unfortunately, this isn’t all that useful and this little bonus isn’t enough to make Goten any better than Trunks. When it comes down to it, party members just don’t do sizable enough damage during battles where Goten’s speed or Trunks’ raw stats end up overshadowing some of the earlier party members. 4 Chiaotzu
The fact Chiaotzu is a party member at all is a bit surprising considering how non-present he is over the course of Dragon Ball Z, but he ends up a shockingly useful party member.🍨 While most would assume Chiatozu to be naturally weak, his Telekinesis ability paralyzes enemies during battle, giving players a huge advantage.
Telekinesis is more than enough to make Chiaotzu a very useful party meඣmber, especially during the end game, but it’s worth keeping in mind how non-present he is. Realistically, most players won’t be running a party with Chiaotzu unless they specifically seek to do so (if they even know he’s a party member.)
3 Yamcha
At first glance, Yamcha doesn't seem like a particularly good party member. Especially when compared to both Krillin and Tien Shinhan ൩who have Solar Flare, what can Yamcha really contribute to the table? It turns out his Taunt technique can ✱actually lend an incredibly helpful hand during some of the late game boss fights.
Yamcha isn’t available often enough where he’s super useful, but Taunt is a great skill and Yamcha is present more than Chiaotzu at t💫he very least. Anyone who takes the time to play through the Intermissions will likely find a lot of value in a party with Yamcha. If they don’t just run Tien and Krillin alongside them 100%🍌 of the time.
2 Tien Shinhan ꧒ ꧙
One of Goku’s fiercest rivals in the original Dragon Ball, it sadly didn’t take too long for Tien Shinhan to lose his luster. Come the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai– a mere two story arcs after his introduction– and Tien Shinhan is already definitively outclassed by Goku in terms of raw power. That said, this has no real bearing on Tien’s usability in Kakarot, w🧸here he stands out as one of the best party members in the entire game.
Not only is Tien just a generally well rounded character with decent stats, his Solar Flare wi🌠ll lock enemies right into place, allowing players to launch into full combos. Between Yamcha, Chiaotzu, and Tien, Solar Flare is the most useful ability amongst the three. Of course, Tien isn’t the only character who can pull of Solar Flare– nor is he the best party member in the game.
1 Krillin
That title belongs , Son Goku’s childhood best friend and the only party member to actually play a decent role in the game. Krillin’s h♚eavily involved in both the Saiyan and Namek arcs, and he’s pretty much always around for Intermissions, ensuring players can put Krillin in their party pretty much whenever they want. His availability alone is enough to make him the best party member in the game, but Solar Flare really saves the day.
The key difference between Krillin and Tien’s version of Solar Flare is that the former is actually and often available for key battles. Tien, on the other hand, is not. This means his Solar Flare is inherently less useful than Krillin’s. All this said, it doesn’t really matter that Krillin is the best party member when all the playable characters can become party members. Taking that into consideration, Goku, Vegeta, or Gohan would be the actual best party members– but 🌱they’re not considered as such by the game.
