Unfortunately, I no longer feel that way. The endgame gets rid of the sea, turns the world red, and fills it with stronger enemies and deadlier obstacles to kick your butt with. Taking away the ocean and filling it with winding caverns populated by ghosts and skeletons is a masterful change of pace, and by keepi⛦ng most of the world we’ve grown accustomed to in play, means we can still explore anything we missed or want to revisit. Not that you’ll want to do with so many new quests to complete and biomes to conquer, all of which reward you with high-level equipment and resources that actively encourage a more daring approach. Both exploration and combat feel different in the endgame, but familiar enough that you don’t feel discouraged about getting to grips with things all over again.
One of my first encounters after the skies turned crimson had me exploring beneath the sea for the first time, moving through dangerous, winding caverns in search of direction. Silence filled the air at f𒅌irst, until purple-eyed corpses rose from the surface ready for a fight.
Skeletons appe🍌ar in the base game, but never in such plentiful nu♈mbers, nor did they seem so relentless in their pursuit of violence. No matter how many you take out, they will keep on coming, while more powerful ogres and other mini-bosses like floating ghost magicians and headless horsemen await around most corners, ready to ruin your day if you aren’t prepared.
There were several battles where my only recourse was to run away, encouraging my pawns to fo🏅llow as I sprinted in whatever direction I could scramble in. Sometimes this would be the refuge of an abandoned town that had long been evacuated, while others would take me to a canyon where there was no way forward but a steep cliff. Hordes of giant dogs, ethereal skeletons, and bloodthirsty harpies clawed at my body, lowering my health to a level where I could only escape by surrendering to death or using up my precious wakestones.
In a way, it was frustrating, but it was a harsh learning experience I was happy to go through as it helped me to recognise Dragon’s Dogma 2’s endgame for what it was - a final lap that asked me to consider everything I’d learned up until that point. I came to new classes I’d otherwise ignored, changing up my pawn archetypes, and considered far more intimately how much each b✃attle might unfold and how I could best tackle the potential weaknesses of each enemy. It is far more challenging, but what I love most is how Dragon’s Dogma 2 isn’t afraid of making you run away. T🍒o realise that this game isn’t the power fantasy we expect it and so many other games in the modern landscape to be.
Don’t get me wrong, Dragon’s Dogma 2 makes you feel incredible when you manage to kill a dragon or down an armoured cyclops, but all of these moments feel earned. Without the trio of pawns by your side and a keen understanding of the mechanics, you’d be swatted like a fly in no time at all. Fights can last for dozens of minutes under the right circumstances, in which you will likely change strategies multiple times or enact a brief retreat if necessary. I’m not an unstoppable warrioꦦr, but one held up by the support of my comrades and beaten down by awe-inspiring creatures just like anyone else would be.
I may dominate this perilous endgame eventually, but right now it’s taking me for a ride I won’t soon forget. It’s forcing me to change up my slew of abilities, pursue new equipment, and alter 🌸the pace I’ve come to appreciate in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Everything about this game is unorthodox, charming, aggressive, and beautifully obtuse. All qualities that extend to the endgame and beyon🐭d in ways few modern games would dare try to replicate. I feel defenceless and terrified, but remain compelled to push onward because I know that, in a matter of days, I will grasp that power once again.
So long as I can survive the unending nigh🐼t and save this realm, otherwise the fight will be for nothin🎶g.
