Every session comes with an unexpected development in the form of gargantuan monster encounters or trekking to the other side of the open world to realise that the only way back is to walk, with no means of fast travel in sight without a stone in hand. There’s also the Dragonsplague, which encapsulates everything I love about it.

Pawns will begin warning you about this strange disease upon returninജg from adventures in other realms, talking about how it can cause pawns to turn against the𒅌ir masters and actively harm innocent people. At first, you might pay it no mind, believing it to be little more than a small nugget of narrative with no meaningful impact. But little did you know that it can turn an entire playthrough upside down if you aren’t careful.

I’m no longer letting any pawn into my party unless they present a negative dragonsplague test taken within the last 24 hours.🐟 I dub thee Capcom Covid.

While I’ve yet to have this happen in my own s꧑ave file, 🐲if a pawn in your party happens to contract the plague, and you rest at an inn located within a populated area, you could wake up to see the entire population murdered at the hands of your companion. The game is ruthless, and doesn’t care if the deceased were future, past, or present quest givers.

Stores or merchants you rely upon for resources, fast travel points, and more will be useless, and it will take a number of in-game days for everyone to eventually respawn. You are warned about the plague th🅘e first time you come across it, as well as the details of exactly how it might spread and the consequences of faili𒉰ng to do something about it.

From that point onward, it warns you to keep an eye on your pawns and to be more mindful about who you recruit and why𒈔. Sometimes it can be as simple as looking into their eyes before bringing them into the fold, since a glowing red haze is often a dead ringer to let you know they’re infected. But it doesn’t show up on menus like any other ailment, and often the only cure is to kill your pawn yourself or get them away from your realm before it’s too late. I recommend drowning them.

The presence of this mechanic is inherently polarising, and has split the community in half as some praise it for being an emergent piece of daring game design, while others bemoan t🐼hat it ruins entire playthroughs if you fail to anticipate its presence.

I get it, and if the plague truly d♑oes push you away from Dragon’s Dogma 2, you have a right to feel that way. But it doesn’t care about your feelings, and this deliberate friction is one of the bravest things I’ve seen the medium attempt in years, especially in a triple-A space where we want to be coddled.

Like many of the seemingly fleeting mechanics found in Dragon’s Dogma 2, the plague is worth taking seriously. It all folds into the wider experience 🍸in ways that can’t be ignored.

When I first heard of the plague, I immediately feared it. My investment in this game can only be matched b💞y similar modern greats like Breath of the Wild and Final Fantasy 7 Remake, to the point that a mechanic daring to upend everything I’ve fought for would be heartbreaking.

It isn’t the end though, and I know ꦛthere is a light at the end of this tunnel, no matter how dim the salvation might appear. NPCs will eventually respawn and their quests along with them. I am also no stranger to hardship in Dragon’s Dogma 2 after spending 40 hours with it. Nearly everything it offers up, from combat to exploration to character customisation, is layered with blunt sophistication, systems it wants you to learn, and if you don’t, it will happily punish you.

You could brave the night in search of a distant campfire, or allow curiosity to swiftly get the better of ♎you as you head into a nearby dungeon only to emerge in a new continent full of overpowered enemies and unknown threats, but adversity is equal to the rewards it offers.

I first stumbled upon dragonplague in the midst of this odyssey, knowing I was hourꦅs away from the nearest Ox Cart in a new location where resting at an inn and getting all the local populace killed would ruin everything. So, with little health and hardly any resources, the only solution was to head back out into the world in search of both a campfire and a shallow grave to bury my offending pawn in. But I made it through, all because Dragon’s Dogma 2 and its many systems pushed against me, and I had no choice but to push right back.

Normally, I’d expect a game to accommodate my frustration, or at least give me an opportunity to turn the dials in my favour, so I could keep moving forward. While you can hire pawns or try out a new vocation, there is no s🥂uch accommodation in Dragon’s Dogma 2, and I think it’s all the better for that.

There is discussion about wanting Capcom to patch the game or ꧑make it more approachable, and while I’m all♌ for performance improvements and other additions of this ilk, you’d be doing the core experience a disservice by changing anything else.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 almost exists in a creative vacuum, one that discounts the past decade of open world game design as it strives to iterate on the original game and nothing more. Ther🍎e is a reason why our reactions to it have been so astounding, because Capcom has dared to stick to its own creative vision instead of allowing outside sources to dilute its own ambition.

The final product can feel archaic and frustrating in places, but these tangible marks are all in service of eventual brilliance, even if it means fighting off an illness y🍃ou are powerless to stop that stands a chance at ruining everything. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
