During your adventures, you're bound to be killed many times by the enemies you come up against in battle. When that happens, the player is given the choice to either respawn at the nearest inn (which is treated as the right choice) or reload from the last autosave, which will likely place you closer to the battle you just lost.

That might seem like a good way of dealing with the fact that there's only one autosave, but there's a pretty big catch from choosing the most recent autosave. If you do that, then Dragon's Dogma 2 will let you know how much it looks down on you by limiting the maximum amount of health you have.

This essentially means that choosing to respawn from the last autosave will put you at a disadvantage for any other battles that you come across until you rest at the nearest inn. You're basically choosing whether you want to keep the progress you've made out in the world since the last save and suffer a harder challenge because of it, or to trudge back to the inn and have to find your way back to where you were.

This isn't the only way that Dragon's Dogma 2 keeps the player in check, either, as you'll also be punished if you choose to take on too many side quests at once. This game really isn't messing around...

If you're wondering why Dragon's Dogma 2 is so rigid about the way it handles saving, the game's director, Hideaki Itsuno, previously revealed in an interview that it's to "encourage exploration" and make sure the player has to follow through on their actions at all times. That might seem like a big hurdle, but it's an easy one to overcome as long as you make sure that you're resting at every inn you see.
