Dreamscaper is a narrative-driven roguelike with permadeath that is meant to move players. Dreamscaper unravels its story through silence and beautiful imagery that you will get to explore each time you dream. Though the game gets very emotional and story-rich, the permadeath reminds you what type of game you're really playing. Dying isn't the end though, since you can recharge and get right back into the procedurally generated levels.

The first boss you'll encounter in Dreamscaper is Fear. Fear takes the form of an outrageously large fish that creates tsunamis and comes hurtling towards you. The fight itself is quite easy once you figure out the phases you have to go through. The phases will be explained below so that you can get your first achievement, Nothing To Fear, which is acquired after d📖efea🐻ting the first boss.

Rigging The Bomb Phase

Dreamscaper fear bombs

This is the first phase of the boss battle. Whenever you get close to one of these bombs, they start ticking and will explode in mere minutes. The boss will maneuver around these bombs without hitting them even once. Your goal here is to range attack a bomb that you know the boss is about to go near. You may also try to run in front of a bomb to start its timer if you understand the boss' path well.

Once this happens, it will explode on the boss and he will go belly-up. This moment of him being upside down only lasts a few seconds. You can take this small moment to throw some ranged damage at him or run up and attack since he's stunned at this moment. Once he's up, the next phase will begin. This bomb phase will repeat throughout the battle, so remember to activate whatever bomb is in front of him.

TIP: Remember to use your Lucid Dream special attack when it's charged up and ready. This allows you to slow down time for a brief moment and deal massive amounts of damage. When the boss is stunned from a bomb attack, you can use your Lucid Dream ability to prolong his stun and deal even more damage than you normally would. Slow down time at any point in the fight to maximize the damage dealt where you're less confident you'll get it otherwise.

Dodging The Projectiles

Dreamscaper fear projectiles

Here, all you have to do is dodge each time a projectile gets launched. Sometimes the projectiles will be around 20 rows of small orbs of water, or it will be one big orb. The direction in which you dodge doesn't matter, so long as you press the dodge button. A perfect dodge results in a brief slow motion, but you don't need that slow motion to trigger to successfully dodge an attack.

During this phase, you are able to make your way to the boss itself and stand at his side. He can't turn and hit you here and will just keep launching projectiles forward. If you're able to get beside him during this, you can deal some extra damage instead of just dodging and waiting for the next phase.

An odd occurrence may happen instead of this projectile phase where the boss will leap into the air and then whip his tail at you. This is anoth🧸er ranged attack. This very short sequence is the hardest attack to dodge out of all Fear phases. Practicing dodging ranged attacks is crucial before starting this boss fight as practice makes perfect.

Just Running Away

Dreamscaper fear tornados

The third phase that Fear unleashes is a dozen tornados that spawn at your feet. Because there are so many, it can be hard to run away properly and dodge them at all. The only thing you can do here is run around the arena in large circles until it's over. The boss will not show himself during this time, so no damage can be done, you just have to run around. If the tornados get too close to your heels, just start spamming that dodge button.

Overview

All three of these phases will rinse and repeat themselves until you've dealt enough damage to defeat the boss. Most of the damage you deal will have to be during the bomb phase above all else. During the bomb phase, you can attack all you like. Do extra damage with the bombs and then pile on more damage once he's stunned from the bombs. The other phases will require you to hyper-focus on dodging and surviving, but you can sneak in some damage here and there during them.

Completing this boss in Dreamscaper will grant you the achievement Nothing To Fear and allow access to more dungeon levels, story, and Med🐻itati🤡on in the waking world.
