Monks who train in the Way of the Ascendant Dragon are those who can incorporate traits of Dragons within their fighting style. It is said that Bahamut himself is the originator of this subclass, teaching this means of fighting in monasteries while under the guise of a human Monk. Practitioners of the Way of the Ascendant Dragon can incorporate several into their fighting style, and they're even able to eventually gain the ability of flight.

This can help with developing and building the backstory of one’s character, further fleshing them out. While some proposed origins in Fizban’⛎s Treasury of Dragons ❀include a character being trained directly by a Dragon or having them come into possession of a draconic scroll, players are also free to come up with unique and personalized origins of their own.

When this subclass is gained at level three, a character gains several abilities, starting with those de🍸tailed in the Draconic Disciple ability. Providing a character access to the Draconic Language (or another language of their choice if they already know draconic), this feature also allows a character to u▨se their reaction to reroll a potential persuasion check.

However, one of the most flavorful aspects of this ability comes in the form of Draconic Stikes, an ability that allows a character’s unarmed strikes to deal their choice of acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison damage. For those looking to utilize fists cloaked in flames or lightning, this ဣis likely the abilityꦫ for you.

A frequent weakness of the Monk class is iꦰts lack of consistent ranged attacking options. Luckily, this subclass aims to patch up this shortcoming. Whenever a character of this subclass takes the at💛tack action, they can replace an attack with a draconic breath weapon, taking a form of their choice between a 20-foot cone or a 30-foot line, with the damage coming in a draconic damage type of their choice. The damage dealt equals two rolls of the character’s martial arts dice, though it increases as they level up.

While this ability can be used a number of times per long r𓄧est꧙ equal to that character’s proficiency bonus, they can expend two Ki points at any time to regain uses of this ability.

While it doesn&rsqu📖o;t last indefinitely, at level 6, a Monk of the Way of the Ascendant Dragon gains the ability to temporarily fly. When using the Step of Wind, they can sprout spectral wings, gaining a flying speed equal to their walking speed for a turn. As Monks are already incredibly mobile, having some of the best movement of any class, this can allow them to cover great aerial distances in a single turn.

2 ♍ Aspect Of The Wyrm

Further allowing a character to utilize draconic traits, at level 11 this Monk subclass gains the Aspect of the Wyrm ability✤. This allows a character to spend a bonus action to channel draconic po🐻wer, creating a ten-foot aura with one of two effects.

Firstly, the Monk may opt to attempt to use this aura to frighten their foes through their draconic presence. At the same time, they can also use this aura defensively, offering them and their allies within this aura resistance to a draconic damage type of their cho🅺ice for up to one minute. This provides the subclass with an added layer of flexibility, allowing them to utilize the ever-useful frightened cಞondition or help negate serious damage for the party.

1 𝔉 Ascendant Aspect

The final ability of the Way of the Ascendant Dragon Monk, the Ascendant Aspect, allows a character to wield yet even more abilities typically associated with Dragons. In addition to gr𒁏eatly improving the Monk’s breath weapon, increasing its size and damage output at the expense of a single Ki point, they can also weaponize their Aspect of the Wyrm, causing any number of creatures they can see to potentially take damage of a draconic damage type of their choice when the Aspect is activated.

As if this all weren’t useful enough, the cherry on top is that the Monk also gains access to blindsight of ten feet, potentially allowing them to see invisible foes and 𝔍objects!
