At high levels, good dungeon bosses can be arguably harder to come by. Sure, there are big bad threats like Ancient Dragons and Tarrasques, but thos🐲e are almost too big. Hunting a Tarrasque isn’t a dungeon boss, it’s its own adventure. Here are five monsters from the Monster Manual that fit the bill for high-level adventurers.

Lich

Liches provide a legitimate threat to a group of high-level players. With a handful of resistances and immunities, a lot of players’ strategies won’t work against the Lich. They can cast spells, and their 💦spell l🐷ist includes interesting magic at low levels, such as mirror image and counterspell, and truly terrifying spells at higher levels, including finger of death and power word kill. The fact that it can paralyze enemies as often as it wants is something to watch out for as well.

Also, Liches are intelligent. While the tarrasque is little more than a natural disaster, players can engage withജ a Lich’s ✨evil plans. Stopping an evil scheme is much more interesting than just stopping a very large armadillo from eating everything. Also, since a Lich can regenerate from its phylactery, players have to be clever and destroy it, or otherwise face a multi-session villain.

Mummy Lord

Mummy Lords aren’t quite as threatening as Liches, but these undead creatures have one thing that Liches don’t – curses. The Mummy Lord’s attacks have a chance of applying Mummy R𝐆ot, which slowly reduces a creature’s hit point maximum until they die. Now this can be cured fairly easily if there’s a cleric in the party, since the recipient of the curse only has to suffer until the next day when they can prepare the remove curse spell. However, if a party doesn’t have a cleric, and the party wizard, warlock, or paladin hasn’t wasted one of their valuable spells on the unlikely need 🌠to remove curses, it becomes a race against time to cure the cursed party member before they crumble into dust.

Balor

Balors are the most powerful demons in the Monster Manไual, and one of the toughest demons players can face outside of a demon lord. While it is mostly just a big tough demon, there are a few things that make it an interesting encounter. One is that the Balor literally lights everything on fire around it. The other is that it explodes when it dies. When a Balor is slain, all creatures within 30 feet of it have to make a Dexterity saving throw or take 20d6 damage. At the end of a tough dungeon full of demons,🅺 that can be enough to threaten a TPK.

Pit Fiend

Pit Fiends are the Infernal version of Balors, that is, the toughest devils players can fight. Like the Balor, it is a big fiend with a lot of hit points and a lot of damღage. However, it can also cast fireball at will, which can force a party to scatter or take lots of damage. Once a party is split up, Pit Fiends can cast wall of f🔜ire to split up the battlefield, then take down individual party members with their brutal multiattacks.

Pit Fiends can serve as a dungeon🧸 boss for lesser devils, or for a cult that is attempting to summon them.

Solar

Many of these bosses are villains – diabolical fiends and evil undead. Who does a party of evildoers fight when they get powerful enough to squash all lesser do-gooders? Enter the Solar. The Solar is one of the most powerful angels in t🌃he Monster Manual, and there’s a lot that can make it an interesting dungeon boss. Like the Pit Fiend, the Solar can split up the battlefield using the blade barrier spell. In addition, its blinding gaze shouldn’t be underestimated; if a character fails the saving throw it is blinded – no time limit, no additional saving throws, just a permanent blind until someone uses lesser restoration.

It also makes a great boss in a holy temple or realm of 𒊎lesser celestials.
