Flexible Roles

Rather than simply being helpful or antagonistic, the rival adventurers within Call of the Netherdeep can be used flexibly based upon the party's actions. Throughout the campaign, whenever this rival party is encountered, the DM will have access to guidelines of how these characters will act based on if they're friendly with the party, indifferent, or directly hostile.

  • If friendly, these characters can serve as endearing allies working towards the same objectives as the party, with these two groups assisting each other along the way.
  • Alternatively, if this party is hostile towards the player characters, they can serve a role comparable to recurring villains that must be overcome throughout a campaign.
  • A DM may introduce these characters as being indifferent to the party with individual members of this rival group growing friendly to the party if treated with kindness or given assistance, while antagonistic behavior from players may cause these rivals to act in a more hostile manner.

Growing Alongside The Party

Rather than remaining a static force within the module, this rival group of adventurers grows alongside the players. In addition to each member of this party having their own distinct stat blocks that dicta🐲te their abilities and capabilities in and out of combat, all five of these characters have three iterations based upon the current chapter of the campaign module.

While these characters are akin to level three adventurers at the beginning of the campaign, by the time the players have reached chapter five, these rival adventurers will have access to unique and synergistic abilities as well as relevant magic items.

Ayo Jabe

Ayo Jabe is the leader of the rival adventuring party that appears in Call of the Netherdeep and is a water genasi ranger born꧂ from orcish parents. Ayo is notably fast ꧋to act and impulsive, with a low tolerance for those who beat around the bush, valuing those who are as headstrong as herself.

Formerly working as a hunter, Ayo is a chaotic good character with several heroic aspirations including living up to the feats of heroes whom she'd read about and slaying a legendary foe.

Dermot Wurder

The level-headed cleric of the group, Dermot Wurder is a lawful good goblin who founded this party alongside Ayo. While Ayo may be brash and quick to act, D♔ermotis even-tempered, aiming t🐓o do everything he can in order to protect his friends and allies.

In addition to being able to protect himself through his use of heavy armor, he can assist his allies through the use of spells such as Bless and Cure wounds. In addition to hiওs ambition to help others, Dermot seeks to discover his own value as a person.

Galsariad Ardyth

Galsariad Ardyth is by and large the oldest member of the party, and is a two-hundred-year-old drow, serving as the party's wizard. Perhaps the most difficult to speak to rival within Call o༒f the Netherdeep, Galsariad is known for his sarcasm and snark, though he appreciates those who show him respect and share common interests in magic.

In addition to having access to useful spells such as Longstrider, Scrying, and Slow, Galsariad specialized and Graviturgy magic that allows him to easily manipulate a battlefield. Galsariad's aspirations each stem from his desire to be validated, seeking to gain mutual respect from one he admires or to make a breakthrough magical discovery.

Irvan Wastewalker

The youngest and most recently joined member of the party as well as the only human in their ranks, Irvan Wastewalker is a dexterous combatant, filling a role comparable to that of a fighter. A member of a feared clan of❀ nomads, Irvan is known for his aptitude in celebratory circumstances and is a notorious heavyweight when it comes to drinking. In addition to being able to deal damage in combat, Irvan is capable of getting back up from ꦯeven the most devastating of blows.

Some of Irvan's most noteworthy goals over the course of the campaign are to simply take in brand-new experiences and to be viewed as mature despite his age.

Maggie Keeneyes

One of the earliest members to join the party alongside Ayo and Demot, Maggie Keeneyes is a massive ogre who stands twelve feet tall. Despite her appearance, Maggie is notably perceptive and intelligent, serving as the party's tactician.

In addition to her aptitude for battle tactics, Maggie is known to enjoy the arts such as poetry and music and loathes those who may judge her based on her appearance. Some of Maggie's most noteworthy ambitions include matching wits with a tactical genius or being able to happily retire, putting her days of combat behind her.
