Though your character's personality depends on you more than anything else, D&D does offer some of their cultures to help you base yourself around if you choose to. They are often described with an enthusiastic nature, wanting to explore and see as much of the world as they can before it's too late.
They're also described as being interested in things of value, such as gems, and having a powerful connection with nature, with one of the subraces even having some basic communication skills with animals. This could be used to make an interesting Druid, even though Gnomes don't have any official subrace that will help you boost your Wisdom score.

Eldritch Knight can make a powerful character to be in the frontline as well; though heavy weapons will be a problem, you could make a Dexterity-based Fighter and mix spells in the process using your Intelligence.

You Have Interesting And Exclusive Feats
A wonderful way to spice your character is to give them interesting feats. There are many to choose from, and the choice has to be made based on what character and build you're going for, so it's hard to recommend feats without knowing more about the character in question. With that said, you have access to different feats for being a Gnome, should you want them. These feats can be found in Xanathar's Guide To Everything.
The first one is Squat Nimbleness, which is exclusive to small races and Dwarves. It will increase your movement by five feet (1.5m), fixing the movement issue mentioned earlier and giving you one point to add to your Strength or Dexterity. You'll become proficient in either Athletics or Acrobatics, and you have an advantage at both of these checks when it comes to escaping a grapple.
The second option is Fade Away, which increases either your Dexterity or your Intelligence by one. It also allows you to use your reaction to make yourself invisible. This reaction can only be triggered after taking damage, and it'll last until the end of your turn or until you attack, cause damage or force someone to roll a saving throw. It has only one use per short or long rest, but it's a useful way to escape danger after receiving serious damage.

Elemental Evil Player's Compendium offers you the Deep Gnome, also called Svirfneblin (don't ask for pronunciation, please).
