What is it about these items that deigns them 'legendary' or 'artifact'? Why do player characters have such trouble getting them? And where might one begin on their quest to achive the nigh unattainable goal of wielding their godlike power? All these questions and more will be answered below.

7 Whelm

Golden warhammer inscribed with runes glowing stars

Alongside Wave and Blackrazor, Whelm was originally introduced to 🐲Dungeons & Dragons all the way back in 1979 with the publishing of the adventure module White Plume Mountain. In this module, player characters were t🍒asked with entering the dungeon of White Plume Mountain and retrieving the three aforementioned sentient magical weapons.

Whelm is a +3 warhammmer that was originally forged by the dwarven Mightyhammer clan, and can only be wielded by a dwarf. The easiest way to explain this weapon would be to compare it to Thor's Mjolnir. It can be thrown in the same way and will return to the owner's grasp, and it can be used to create a shockwave that stuns all creatures of your choice within sixty feet on a failed DC 15 Constitution save. Additionally, the weapon hates goblins and giants, and its great purpose is to slaughter these creatures and protect dwarvenkind.

6 Wave

trident shaped with sea shells and fins
Trident of Fish Command via Wizards of the Coast

As its name might suggest, Wave is a +3 trident that can only be wielded by a character who worships a god of the sea. This item's greatest strength lies in the fact that it functions as a number of different magic items that normally require attunement. Consequently, wielding Wave is like wielding a Trident of Fish Command, a Weapon of Warning, a Cap of Water Breathing, and a Cube of Force all at once, with the added benefits that it's a +3 weapon that can speak with aquatic animals and involve you in the conversation.

Now, that's a lot of bang for your buck. However, this powerful item does come with costs. Firstly, the sentient trident is prone to singing sea shanties, so prepare your ears. Furthermore, the weapon desires to convert mortals to the worship of the sea gods. Those who refuse, it would prefer to see drowned. Finally, the weapon was forged by a family of storm giants, whom were imprisoned by a sea god. Consequently, Wave worries that its true purpose may be the demise of one of the sea gods it worships. Now, that's a spicy meatball!

5 ꦜBlackrazor ဣ

Forsworn Paladin by Lorenzo Mastroianni

The final member of the White Plume Mountain gang, Blackrazor is a +3 greatsword that cannot be wielded by a lawful creature. In case that wasn't ominous sounding enough, the sword's primary purpose is to devour souls. Blackrazor is convinced that everything sprang from nothing, and to nothing it shall eventually return. It believes that its purpose is simply to speed along the end of all things. When you slay a creature with Blackrazor, you gain temporary hit points equal to the creature's hit point maximum.

In addition, while the sword provides you with temporary hit points, you have advantage on all attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks. As if that wasn't already too much, you can also sense the presence of all creatures but constructs and undead within sixty feet of you, and the sword can cast haste on you using its own concentration. However, if the sword does not feed on a soul at least once every three days, it will rebel against its wielder. Blackrazor also bosses you around, and nobody likes that.

4 💖 Axe Of The Dwarvi💟sh Lords

Axe of the Dwarvish Lords via Wizards of the Coast

The Axe of the Dwarvish Lords belonged to the first king of the dwarves, who united their people's clans (despite their grudges) and ushered in an era of peace and prosperity for all. Sadly, the weapon has since been lost, after generations passed and dwarves vied against one another for the power the axe bestowed. Like Wave, the axe also functions as multiple attunement-required magic items, including a Belt of Dwarvenkind, Dwarven Thrower, and a Sword of Sharpness.

The axe also allows you to conjure an earth elemental, as well as cast the Teleport spell when it is touched to any dwarven stonework. It has several other randomly determined properties. Lastly, it bears a funny curse that gradually provides its wielder with the appearance of a dwarf, if they aren't one already.

3 🌌 The Book Of Vile Darkness

The Book of Vile Darkness by Daniel Ljunggren

One of many items connected to the lich-god of secrets, Vecna, the Book of Vile Darkness is a collection of all of the terrible thoughts, secrets, and discoveries that Vecna and other similarly terrible authors have dared to catalog. Attuning to the book has a chance to change your character's alignment to neutral evil. It then takes 80 hours of study in order to properly unearth the book's dark secrets. These might include details on the process of becoming a lich or death knight, the true names of fiends, forbidden dark magic, and any other number of despicable things.

The book also allows its user to increase one of theiꦇr ability scores by two point, to a maximum of 24, by lowering another of their ability scores by the same amount. It gifts its user a physical disfigurement, to mark their devotion to evil for all to see, and provide them with advantage on Charisma checks made to interact with others. It also gives you the power to cast Dominate Monster on an evil creature once p𒊎er day, and it comes with nine other randomly determined properties. If you do not perform an act of evil for over ten days, or willingly perform an act of good, the book vanishes.

2 🎃 ✤ The Sword Of Kas

sword of kas
Sword of Kas in the Dungeon Master's Guide by Wizards of the Coast

Yet another remnant of Vecna's great evil, the Sword of Kas is the weapon that dealt the god-lich his killing blow. Originally wielded by Kas, Vecna's right hand man, the sword was a gift from Vecna himself. It eventually convinced Kas to act against its creator, so that it and Kas might rule Vecna's empire in his stead. Unfortunately for Kas, the climactic showdown between the two wrought the destruction of both Vecna and himself.

Nonetheless, the sword lives on. It seeks to destroy what remains of Vecna, and cleanly cut his existence from this world. The sword is a +3 magic longsword that scores a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20, and deals an extra 2d10 slashing damage when used against undead. It also casts Dominate Person on its wielder if its not bathed in blood shortly after being drawn. Beyond that, the sword adds a d10 to your initiative, allows you to cast 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:a number of powerful spells, and co🐭mes with four randomly deter♓mined properties.

1 Wand Of Orcus 𝐆

Wand of Orcus by Andrew Mar

The Wand of Orcus serves its demon lord master Orcus with total loyalty, working to further Orcus' goal of killing everything in the multiverse. This is a sentient +3 wand that can be wielded as a mace, deals an extra 2d12 necrotic damage on a hit, comes with six randomly determined properties, and provides a +3 bonus to AC. The wand also gives its user access to six powerful necromancy spells, as well as the ability to conjure up 500 hit points worth of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:skeleton and zombie creatures.

While this may be the most powerful item on this list, rest assured that the Wand of Orcus is no gift. First off, if you fail the DC 17 Constitution saving throw to attune to the wand, you di🎐e. Secondly, the wand will only ever be loyal to Orcus, no matter how the wielder compels it. Last of all, wielding the Wand of Orcus is tantamount to aiding Orcus in his goal to destroy all life: including you.
