Even though one can joke about how commonly they're used for the start of a campaign, there's no denying that sooner or later, almost every campaign will have players venture into a tavern. Whether it's for a drink, some rest, or just to meet some new friendly faces, they'll get there eventually.

However, any Dungeon Master knows that as common as taverns are, it means that sometimes it can be a bit difficult trying to come up with different encounters to include. But we have you covered with a few unique encounters for you to pepper throughout the party's visit to the tavern.

6 A Murderer Afoot ও 𒈔

As the party drink and chat among themselves in a tavern, the night is ruined when a small platoon of town guards burst through the do༒or. The chatter and cheeriness leave out the open door into the cold night, and everyone turns to face the guards. One of them announces that they are looking for a murderer. The description is of an elven gentleman with dark hair and fine clothes, last seen entering this tavern. The good news is a person in the tavern that matches that description is sitting at the bar. The bad news is that three elves in the tavern fit the vဣague description.

Nobody can leave or enter the tavern until the situation is sorted out, and the guards demand to walk away with somebody to answer for the crime. With most of the tavern wanting to stay out of it, it's up to the party to piece together the evidence, question all three elves, and determine which one of the elves is the murderer.

5 𓂃 The Explosive Wizard ♏

Wizards often get the stereotype of a bumbling old madman gifted with the arcane but had to sacrifice some common sense and social graces to get that book smart. Fortunately, like most things, such a stereotype isn't true, assuming the party isn't 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:making such misteps𒁃 if any are wizards. Unfortunately, it stings just that much more when a wizard decides the best place to transport to in aღn ex🌊plosion of smoke is the middle of a busy tavern.

When confronted, the wizard will merely ramble on how this was "the wrong destination" and that "the assassin is chasing him." However, whether there's something more to his stories or he's perhaps an elderly wizard plagued by bad nightmares and instinctively teleported out of bed and into some tavern is a different story. Maybe he is being genuine as he rambles that an assassin has been sent after him by some lord as part of some political conspiracy. Or perhaps he's just out of it. Either way, this is an easy encounter to spice things up by introducing a wizardly NPC or maybe even throwing a possible quest in the lap of your players concerning the beast the wizard is running from.

4 🐭 Can I Have Your Name?

Sometimes in life, bad timing can trip you up, which is definitely the case here. When the party arrive💙s at a busy bar, they have a hard time getting an order in until someone else seems to hop on the bar to help out. When the party members manage to put their order in, the bartender strikes up a bit of conversation and asks a simple question, "can I have your name?" That question is enough for most Dungeons & Dragons veterans to put them on edge.

However, sometimes your players might make a mistake. With such an innocent question, they may truthfully answer with their name, not realizing they've now given their name to a Fey who was posing as a bartender to take advantage of the chaos of a busy night. Once the players realize what's happened when they can't say their names, they have to track down the bartender and see if they can find some way to convince the Fey the fun is over and to give them their names back.

3 Less A B🃏ar Fight, More A Bar War

Taverns are excellent for three things: 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:drinking, talking, and fighting. As the party members relax in a tavern, whether one familiar to them that they've been to before or a new one entirely. As they are enjoying themselves and relaxing, an argument between two folks at the bar spirals out of control, and before you know it, a fight has broken out. Although this could just be an annoyance and chalked up to not being the party's problem, things get worse after a couple more pushes and spilled drinks. Now a few more angry folk join the bar fight.

It's grown so large that it's turned from a nuisance to a never-ending storm of punches, kicks, and even some swinging bar stools and tossing tables. The bartenders are unable to control the fight, and one of them even jumps in. So now it's up to the party. Will they jump in the fight and try to knock some sense into the folks, or are they going to find some other way to resolve the situation? Either way, this kind of encounter is a fun way to push some excitement on a typical night at the tavern.

2 ♓ The Special

From a more chaotic encounter to something more calming, remember that taverns are businesses. As a result, it makes sense that they might do some things to boost their business. However, this isn't some word-of-mouth marketing plan or discounts on drinks. Instead, when the players get inside the tavern, they notice a few select people look absolutely exhausted. Not strictly out of place; they could be some drunks who maybe had a little too much. But when the party orders a drink, they are immediately told about one called 'The Special.'

'The Special' is an expensive hundred gold and was made with the help of a local alchemist. If anybody drinks 'The Special,' they must roll a DC 20 Constitution saving throw. If they succeed, then they get magically enhanced with a small boon. However, if they fail, they get a level of exhaustion. So far, whatever this drink is, it does seem to have the town's attention, and people are flocking to try out 'The Special.' The party better think quickly about whether they want to try out the special concoction.

1 The Com෴fo🌼rt After A Battle

At the end of the day, a tavern is a special place. It's a place of rest, of comfort, a place where the party can finally take some time out of their chaotic lives just to relax. It makes such a place almost like a home away from home. The comforting atmosphere of such a place is probably one of the reasons taverns are used so often, why they're so useful and why they have become such a staple in Dungeons & Dragons. So what happens when that place of rest and recovery becomes that for a group of people who desperately need it, like soldiers coming from a nearby battle?

Perhaps they've fought some monsters or bloodied by a skirmish with another army, but either way, the tavern is full of soldiers, some wounded, some resting, almost all of them drinking. The soldiers fill the room and regale each other with stories while looking for any healing. Perhaps the party could help them out and hear tales of the nearby battle, those they've lost, and those they miss at home. Perhaps with this encounter, the party can help bring that homely feeling of the tavern to this group of wounded souls.
