Dire consequences may await those who receive such gifts, and none understand that more than the warlock. The Fathomless Warlock boasts powers that reside in the tentacles of some of the ocean's most incomprehensible creatures.
As a warlock of the Fathomless, you꧙ have made a pact with such a creature. You deal in the magic of the depths, summoning elemental deluges and surges of lightning to control the battlefield. You may swim the seas for your party, breathing cold water through your lungs. Or, you may find yourself dragged deep beneath the waves, the horrible will of your patron echoing through your head.
Patron
As a Fathomless Warlock, one of your main issues with character creation will be deciding on a patron. Other warlocks have the significant benefit of being able to choose from named cha🍒racters within the Dungeons and Dragons canon if they so wished. The Fathomless Warlock does not share this benefit, but the vague description provided allows for some creativity.
Here are some ideas for patrons.
Leviathan |
A massive, dark sea creature, some myths refer to the Leviath🤡a💮n as being the offspring of a god. Its spirit is reborn every time it dies. |
Sea Hag |
Sea Hags reside in underwater lairs and grottos, despising all that is good and beautiful. A reclusive monster, the Sea Hag may use her illusory m▨agic to mess with the mind🦄s of her prey before devouring them. |
Kraken |
Able to crush the hull of a Galleon, the Kraken is an elemental force to be reckoned with. Once the ruler of the sea, the Kraken lurks, waiting for its chance to reign ag🎶ain. |
Aboleth |
Amphibious and eel-like, Aboleths swim the depths looking for creatures to mentally incapacitate and force into servitude. Cruel, intelligent, and psionic, they believe that most life forms are beneath them. |
You are not at all limited to this list. In fact, the Fathomless Warlock is so open-ended in terms of your patron that there's a lot of room for you to create one yourself. Work with your Dungeon Master to best create a watery patron to suit your needs.
Fathomless Warlock Features Overview
The Fathomless Warlock relies on damage and control. One feature you gain at first level reflects this, allowing you to use your bonus actions to create a spectral tentacle with which you can lash at your foes. You'll also gain an increased swimming speed.

Tentacle of the Deep

- You create a ten-foot-long tentacle wherever you can see, as long as it's within 60 feet of you. It'll last for a minute and will disappear if you create another. Upon creation, you can make a melee spell attack against a creature within ten feet of the tentacle, causing your foe to take 1d8 cold damage on a hit. Their speed is also reduced by ten feet. This feature only levels to 2d8 when you hit tenth level and can be used a number of times equal to your proficiency modifier. On a bonus action, you can move the tentacle 30 feet.
- This allows for a lot of damage early on in your leveling and provides a viable option for controlling the battlefield by reducing your foe's speed temporarily.

Gift of the Sea

You can breathꩲe underwater, and your swim speed shoots up to 40 feet.
Your next features come at sixth level, empowering the spectral tentacle to take hits for you or your companions and giving you the ability to resist cold damage.

Guardian Coil

- This functions a bit like the Interception feat but is slightly weaker. You have to be able to see the creature taking damage while being within ten feet of the tentacle. You expend your reaction and can take away 1d8 from the damage done.
- By the time you hit 10th level in this class, the damage will be reduced by the tentacle to 2d8.

Oceanic Soul

You acquire resistance to cold damage. By extension, you and any creature that is submerged can comprehend what you say to each other. You both just have to be immersed. 'Submerged' is vague, so while one can assume that it refers to water, this isn't explicitly stated.
A bonus action that scales is more than useful to a warlock, especially if you plan on being damage-based. No♊t many warlock subclasses offer this, making Fathomless Warlock unique both in that and their ability to intercept damage without feats.
At tenth level, your features lean more heavily into crowd control, and you gain a🅷nother spell to add to your repe✤rtoire.

Grasping Tentacles

- You learn how to cast Evard's Black Tentacles. This spell makes areas become difficult terrain, as well as batters and restrains those who fail Dexterity rolls to traverse it. It doesn't count against the number of spells you know, so this is a great addition to the Fathomless Warlock's spell list, and what's better, you can cast it once without a spell slot.
- You also gain a few temporary hit points equal to your warlock level, which improves the Fathomless Warlock's durability.
At fourteenth level, things start to get even more bizarre. Following your well-established theme, you gain more powers in the form of tentacles. A whirl of tentacles appears, providing a꧅ portal for you to travel through.

Fathomless Plunge

As an action, you can teleport yourself and five other willing creatures within 30 feet of you to a body of water you've seen. This doesn't require you to have been there, only that you've seen it. Everyone teleports up to 1 mile away into said body of water, or next to it.
- This will replenish every short or long rest and only works on bodies of water of pond size or larger.

Best Species For Fathomless Warlock
You can ultimately choose whatever you want when playing a Fathomless W๊arlock, though some species may lend more to the class t♍han others.
For instance, choosing to play a triton may be thematic and lend well to connecting species and class. However, the Fathomless Warlock subclass gives you access to cold resistance at sixth level, thereby rendering one of the triton's existing resistances less helpful.
Consider water genasi as an alternative if this is important to you, though the spell Create and Destroy Water will double up.
Tiefling remains an excellent warlock species, and their inherent casting can help cushion the warlock's spell list. A species like Half-Orc will improve how tough your Fathomless Warlock is, especially with the feature Grasping Tentacles allowing you temporary hit points. To that same point, Lizardfolk may be a viable option as well.
Fallen Aasimar may work well for you, too, using their Necrotic Shroud, an ability that causes enemies to gain the feared condition, to assist with the control aspects of the Fathomless Warlock's spellcasting.
Regardless of what may benefit the Fathomless Warlock, w𝓀ith customized origin, your species choices are limitless.
Best Ability Scores For Fathomless Warlock
Charisma |
Charisma improves your abilities as the face of your party, and makes sure you're doing as much damage as you possibly can as a warlock. As your spellcasting modifier, Charisma should always be high when crafting a warlock. |
Constitution |
You may have temporary hit points and the ability to control a battlefield, but your existing hit points should be taken care of above all else, as you'll have a very small amount of hit die. While still above that of a wizard, it's best to keep fate in check by making sure a well-timed spell won't knock your character unconscious. You won't have to entirely rely on your Spectral Tentacle for peace of mind if you have a couple extra points in Constitution. |
Dexterity |
Warlocks are embarrassingly easy to down, and if your Constitution and temporary hit points aren't keeping you mostly out of trouble, your Dexterity should. Your armor class will become more important depending on whether you selected Pact of the Blade as your pact boon, but other than that, it's still good to remember that being harder to hit will only improve things. |
Warlocks as a whole do best with Charisma, Constitution, and Dexterity as their prime stats, with Intelligence, Wisdom, and Strength trailing behind. For Fathomless Warlock i💞n particular, you may be inclined to boost your Intelligence.
By making a pact with a creature that lurks in the deep, you may open yourself up to unsavory encounters with creatures like aboleths. Psionics may become more prevalent in your story the more Lovecraftian💞 you lean with Fathomless Warlock, which is something the class itself very much nudges you towards.
Intelligence saving throws and Investigation checks may be important to you. Having a solid Arcana modifier may also 🍨be useful, especially if you foresee being one of the few casters in the party.
Strength should likely come last when creating a Fathomless Warlock, and if you play your crowd-controlling spells well, you may never need to worry about being grappled, especially with Evard's Black Tentacles active.

As a Fathomless Warlock, you'll get several spells as you level. They'll line up with the theme of the subclass, and provide you access to spells otherwise not on the warlock spell list.

At first level, receiving Thunderwave on an expanded spell list is great. Not only is it a low-level area of effect spell, but it's also great for keeping opponents far from you. Sleet Storm is also good for this reason, with the added benefit of causing your opponents to lose concentration on their spells while potentially knocking them down. Silence can effectively function as a weakening age﷽nt for mages, completely eradicating the verbal component of their spells.
Summon Elemental lets you control an elemental on the battlefield, and this could work in tandem with Tentacle of the Deep, leaving you to puppet the two around the map. Bigby's Hand is a great spell to receive at fifth level, especially for a class with so few spell slots, and the control it lends you synergizes well with the Fathomless Warlock's existing abilities, what with the grappling capabilities it has.
