Wizards gain immense magical power through years of study, which is great, but very boring. Wizards looking for some excitem🗹ent can branch out by multiclassing. However, not all classes work the same with wizards. Here’s a guide to the be꧟st multiclasses to take.

Artificer

Via: Wizards of the Coast

Artificers are a decent choice, with spells that are cast using Intelligence and proficiencies in light and medium armor and shields. Artificers are half casters, so taking too many levels will reduce your spell slot levels, but it’s better than taking levels in something like a fighter for the same proficiencies. You also gain Infusions at 2nd level, including a +1 arcane focus and +1 armor. If you want to take three levels in the class, the Artillerist subclass gives you a good use of a bonus action with the Eldritch Cannon༒. If your DM allows Unearthed Arcana content, gives you heavy armor proficiency and power armor.

Barbarian

There are better ways to boost your AC than Unarmored Defense, and the defense you get from raging doesn’t offset the fact that y🌺ou can’t cast spells while doing so. All you do is cast spells, so this basically makes you worthless.

Bard

Bards get Bardic Inspiration, which is a very powerful ability even if you don’t upgrade it. However, the number of times you can use it is based on your Charisma, which wizards are not normally known for. Any abilities that boost different skills can probably be replaced by utility sp🧸ells that fulfill similar roles.

Cleric

Cleric subclasses are great, especially those that grant heavy armor proficiencies. Taking a level in Forge Domain is about the best defense wizards can get, with heavy armor proficiency and the ability to add +1 AC to a suit of armor. Life Domain gives a boost to all healing, which is especially noteworthy sin▨ce taking only one level of cleric gives knowledge of the entire cleric spell list. You can only prepare a few spells a day, but preparing spells like mass healing word can help you maximize this abi💦lity.

Druid

Zendikar Rising

One level of druid gives knowledge of the entire druid spell list, but you’ll only be able to prepare so many per day. The Circle of the Land subclass gives you some always-prepared spells at 2nd level, some of which are very usꦛeful to have on hand. Low levels of Wild Shape isn’t that great if you have a familiar. You gain armor proficiencies, but can’t wear metal, which is still better than nothing.

Fighter

1st level gives proficiencies in light and medium armor and shields, along with a little bit of healing (which goes a long way for a wizard). Two levels gives Acꦛtion Surge, which allows a wizard to take one very good turn per short rest. The ability to cast two leveled spells in a single turn can drastically turn the tide of a battle. Howe✅ver, levels in fighter will also cause your spell slot levels to lag behind.

Monk

Monks get Unarmored Defense, which is worse than just getting an armor proficiency. 2nd level abilities aren’t that good for wizards – Flurry of B🐲lo⭕ws is useless, Step of the Wind can be done better by rogues, and Patient Defense is only good as a very last resort.

Paladin

Proficiencies in light and medium armor and shields are great for wizards. Lay on Hands healing is minimal, but you’re so squishy, you’ll need all the healing you can get. At 2nd leve🐲l, the Defense fight🐼ing style gives you added AC, and Divine Smite lets you use your high-level spell slots to deal a lot of damage. However, applying smite damage relies on hitting someone with a weapon, and wizards have a lot better things to do with high-level spell slots.

Ranger

If your wizard wants to be a tracker for some reason, this is what a ranger multiclass gives you. Otherwise the armor proficie🍌ncies and Defense fighting style can be given by better multiclasses.

Rogue

Via: Wizards of the Coast

Light armor proficiency isn’t much, but as a wizard you get nothing, so you can’t complain. As a low-level rogue, you get a few proficiencies for util🃏ity skills and even boosts to those skills, but wizards can often solve similar problems with utility spells. Cunning Action is great for keeping you away from dangerous enemies. However, as a non-spellcaster class, rogue levels will lose you spell slot levels.

Sorcerer

Sorcerers get metamagic at 3rd level, and applying metamagic to wizard spells is one of the main reason to take sorcerer levels, since it opens a lot of options. While sorcerers don’t get armor proficiencies, Draconic Bloodline will boost your AC a little, Divine Soul will help 🎐you succeed against saving throws, and Storm Sorcery will help you stay away from enemies. You won’t lag behind in spell slot levels either.

Warlock

There’s not a lot of things that warlocks give to wizards that other classes don’t, but it can be interesting for roleplaying purposes. Hexblade warlocks get p🔴roficiency with medium armor and shields, which is good for wizards. Additionally, Hexblade’s Curse gives an increase to damage rolls, which is useful for spells with multiple attacks like scorching ray or magic missile, and doubled critical hit chance on attacks, which is great for higher-level attack spells. If you have good Charisma, a one-level dip isn’t terrible.
