Most notably, the book introduces a third core type of Dragon: the Gem Dragons. So today, we’re going to shine a light on this Dr🎀agon variety, and explore everything you need to know about them!
Updated on June 2, 2022 by Paul DiSalvo: While Chromatic Dragons and their Metallic rivals are among the most iconic monsters in D&D, Gem Dragons can allow a DM to include a Dragon within a campaign whilst using a species that are just as likely to ally to a part as they are to serve as a foe. Due to their distinct psionic capabilities and natures, Gem Dragons can fit a wide variety of roles in a campaign.
9 👍 Typicall🐠y Neutrally Aligned
While the two pre🍃viously established categories of Dragons, Chromatic 🐎and Metallic, are typically evil and good respectively, Gem Dragons have the distinction of most commonly appearing as neutrally aligned creatures.
While individual membe🔥rs of each Gem Dragon species may sometimes lean closer to a good or evil alignment, ♉these Dragons tend to land in a more morally ambiguous space.
8 ไ Psionic Spellcasters 🐭
One of the♔ most distinct elements of the five types of Gem Dragons is that they are all inherently psionic. This allows them to telepathically communicate, a trait that is actually passed on to their respective Dragonborn ancestors.
This trait also causes Gem Dragons to have latent access to Telepathic abilities, with the most powerful Gജem Dragons known as Gem Greatwyrms even being able to restrain countless creatures at once with their telepathy. As they grow in age, all species of Gem Dragons even gain access to the ability to cast spells, with the spells they can cast being determined by their species.
7 A𝐆methyst Dragons
While Red Dragons are typically considered the strongest species of Chromatic Dragon and Gold Dragons are viewed as the most powerful type of Metallic Dragon, Amethyst Dragons are lauded as being the most powerful of the Gem Dragons. Characterized by their ability to deal sizable amounts of force damage while toting a🧸n incredibly rare resistance to said damage types, Amethyst Dragons are typically true neutral beings known for their fascination with the inner workings of the multiverse.
Known to hoard treasures from across the multiverse, when in combat, Amethyst Dragons can produce dangerous exploding crystals and are also known to cast potent spells such as Force Cage, Globe of Invulnerability, and Freedom of Movement. Through t🅺heir high damage output and ability to control the battlefield, Amethyst dragons are easily among the most powerful Gem Dragons.
6 🥀 Cryst𝕴al Dragons
Cyrstal Dragons are known as the most oꦫptimistic Dragons within the multiverse of D&D ജand tend to be chaotic neutral. Known for their kindness and vibrant energy, these Dragons are widely known as astronomers, spending much of their time studying and tracking the stars.
While these Dragons tend to take their residence in frigid climates, areas in which they form their lairs begin to brim with lif🐻e so abundantly that those attempting to forage for food within six miles of a Crystal Dragon lair do so with advantage. In combat, a Crystal Dragon’s breath weapon deals radiant damage and it has access to great utility spells that include the likes of Command, Greater Restoration, Hypnotic Pattern, and Invisibility.
5 ꩲ ♐ Emerald Dragons
Most freque𓆉ntly appearing as lawful neutral beings, Emerald Dragons have impressive psychic abilities. Fascinated by culture, these reserved Dragons prefer to view creatures from afar, disguising themselves or utilizing magical illusions to hide thꦛeir presence.
If comfortable enough with the customs of a given area, an Emerald Dragon will often assume a humanoid form to view the culture of a given area firsthand. With a notably dangerous psychic breath, these Dragons have access to many impressive disorienting spells such as Major Image and Mislead, even👍 having access to the Etherealness spell. This combination of abilities can make Emerald Dragons rather difficult to target and damage whilst they target their foes from afar with their breath weapon.
4 🍎 Sapphire Dragons 🌠
Known as some of the most militant Dragons in D&D, Sapphire Dragons are actively opposed to aberrations and interdimensional threats to the Material Plane, doing what they can to keep such threats at bay. Known for their ability to formulate combat strategies, Sapphire Dragons tend to be lawful neutral creatures that make their homes underground, often finding themselves at odds with the likes of followers of Lolth and Mindflayers, while 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:allying with subterranean gnomes.
In combat, the breath weapons of Sapphire ﷺDragons can deal severe thunder damage while they are capable of casting spells such ꧒as Teleport, Telekinesis, and Hold Monster to control the flow of a battle.
3 Topaz Dragons 🌌
While Crystal Drago🅠ns have a reputation of being the biggest optimists of all Dragons, conversely, Topaz Dragons are without a doubt the most pessimistic Dragons in D&D. Chaotic neutral, these Dragons are fascinated by the cycle of death, however, rather than simply wreaking destruction where they go, they aim to do so to help spur rebirth, such as by clearing sites of destruction so plants may grow. Known for their antisocial manner and poor attitudes, they famously love the sight of the ocean, making coastal lairs while simultaneously detesting the feeling of being wet.
In combat, Topaz Dragons have destructive necrotic breath weapons, the ability to disintegrate targets they reduce to zero HP with their Essential Reduction attack, and the ability to cast 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:spells like Antilife Shell and Bane.
2 👍 ﷽ Draconic Shard
When an extraordinarily powerful Gem Dragon dies, its consciousness may refuse to pass on with its body, causing the Dragon's soul to attach itself to an object such as a crystal or an item from its hoard. Though they can produce spectral forms that appear as incorporeal versions of their original bodies, these undead Gem Dragon retain their mind in its entirety and often still aim to carry out their original ambitions. It's said that some Draconic Shards take on the guise of sentient magic items, aiming to manipulate adventurers to do their bidding.
When in combat, these spectral Dragons are quite dangerous, boasting a CR of 17 and the ability to deal severe psychic damage, stunning a target in the process. While its damage output and incredible 80-foot flying speed should not be taken lightly, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Through its Commanding Thought legendary action, a Gem Shard is capable of controlling the movement and actions of another creature unless it's capable of succeeding a DC 20 Wisdom save.
Once a Draconic Shard is defeated in combat, it will more than likely return. This is because when a Draconic Shard is reduced to zero HP, it disappears, leaving behind nothing but a gem. Unless this gem is destroyed, the Shard regains all of its hit points in a matter of days, As this gem has an AC of 20 and immunity to all damage save for force damage, destroying the gem ofꦅ a Draconic Shard is easier said than done.
1 Sardior
Though the progenitors of Chromatic Dragons and Metallic Dragons - Tiamat and Bahamut - ꦫare among the most iconic gods in all of D&D, Gem Dragons originate from the Ruby Drago, Sardi⭕or. It is said that Sardior was the first creation of Bahamut and Tiamat, and was the first of the Gem Dragons.
Though Sardior is a being that is said to have long since perished, it's said that the first Gem Dragons sprung forth from this fallen lesser deity, with its essence living within every Gem Dragon. Sardior's Dragonborn champions found within Fizban's Treasury of Dragons give us a glimpse of traits wielded by this lost god, such as potent psionic abilities and a breath weapon that fires off blasts of severe heat.
