The various editions of Dungeons & Dragons have had trouble accomodating regular magic and psionics together in the same setting. The new content in Unearthed Arcana for the current edition of Dungeons & Dragons combines them into one, which means that we can create Jean Grey from the X-Men, aka, 𝔍the Phoenix, as a D&amไp;D character.

Jean Grey was one of the five original members of the X-Men and was the first girl on the team. She possesses a mixture of telepathy and telekinesis, both of which can be applied in numerous different ways. Jean's telepathy can do everything f🔜rom invisibility (by st⛦opping people from seeing her with her mind) to long-range communication, while her telekineses can let her fly and act as a powerful barrier from attacks. Jean would go on to be possessed by the alien entity known as the Phoenix Force, turning her into one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe. Jean's time as the Phoenix resulted in some of the most memorable X-Men storylines in history, as the Phoenix Force became corrupted while inside her body, which eventually transformed her into the cosmic horror known as the Dark Phoenix.

The version of Jean Grey we have created uses material from the Player's Handbook and It bears mentioning that the content in the Unearthed Arcana article is considered playtest material and it needs to be cleared with the DM before use. Jean Grey is a human (non-variant) sorcerer who takes on the Psionic Soul Sorcerous Origin at level one. Using the basic stat spread listed on page 13 of the Player's Handbook and taking her race into🐎 account, Jean Grey's starting stats would be STR 9, DEX 14, CON 11, INT 13, WIS 15, and CHA 16.

Dark Phoenix

Jean Grey spe🐟nt many years studying at Xavier's Academy and would go on to be an instructor to new students. The movie version of Jean was also a doctor, as she was given the role originally meant for Hank McCoy/Beast. As such, we have no problem giving her the Sage background. Her starting skills would be Arcana, Histo🅘ry, Persuasion, and Insight. If the variant Feat rules are used, then she would benefit from Elemental Adept (Fire), Keen Mind, Spell Sniper, and War Caster. She would pick Quickened Spell and Subtle Spell as her first Metamagic abilities, followed by Empowered Spell, then Distant Spell.

In terms of alignment, Jean Grey would fall into Chaotic Good. Like the other members of the X-Men, she fights to protect the world that hates and fears her. The X-Men exist ou🅰tside of the boundaries of the law and are often opposed by the governments of the world, yet they risk their lives to face super villains and cosmic-level threats whenever they are needed. If she becomes the Dark Phoenix over the course of the story, then she would switch to Chaotic Evil, as the destruction of reality itself becomes her new goal.

Jean Grey's mutant abilities are based around telepathy and telekinesis, which can be adapted into things like mind control, illusions, force energy, and long-range communication. The Phoenix Force gave her access to incredible pyrokinetic powers. All of this is easily accommodated by the sorcerer spell list, which means that Jean Grey would benefit from mind sliver, blade ward, dancing lights, friends, light, mage hand, message, minor illusion, prestidigitation, burning hands, charm person, color spray, comprehend languages, disguise self, mage armor, magic missile, silent image, sleep, mind thrust, alter self, blindness/deafness, blur, crown of madness, detect thoughts, gust of wind, hold person, levitate, mirror image, scorching ray, shatter, suggestion, clairvoyance, fear, fireball, fly, hypnotic pattern, major image, tongues, intellect fortress, confusion, dominate beast, wall of fire, dominate person, hold monster, telekinesis, mass suggestion, true seeing, delayed blast fireball, reverse gravity, dominate monster, incendiary cloud, power word stun, meteor swarm, and wish.

Magic has become more prevalent in the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse with each new edition, and sorcerers have become the mutants in many campaign worlds. This means that Jean Grey's psionic powers can come from a distant relative who came from the astral plane. Phoenixes exist in the Dungeons & Dragons universe and they are extremely powerful beings, so it could be revealed that one of her ancestors was a phoenix who sired a child while in human form. The twist involving Jean's backstory is that the source of her power is unknown🦩, but she eventually discovers that she has a phoenix in her family, and she has inherited their powers.

The temptation to become the Dark Phoenix could also be a major theme when running her as a Dungeons & Dragons character. Phoenixes are beings of purity and light, but humans can be seduced to the dark side. The phoenix part of her could be attracted to evil deeds and attempt to override the human part of her mind. This story could play out in a number of different ways and the player should discuss the concept with the DM, as they might want to expand the storyline into part of the campaign. It's possible that D&D Jean will fall to evil and the other party members have to try and save her (like in the comics), before an outside entity decides that she's too dangerous to keep alive, and the group has to fight for her. It's possible that Jean just has to try and control the Dark Phoenix side of her whenever she is tempted to do something evil, possibly resulting in a Wisdom saving throw to try and hold it back. It'൩s unlik🐻ely that the D&D Dark Phoenix will ever become the cosmic-level threat of the comic book version of the character, but it can be used as the basis for a lot of interesting stories.
