Rangers have always been a controversial class in Dungeons & Dragons. Many players love the theme and flavor of the class, while others consider it to be one of the weakest classes in the 5th edition and avoid playing 𝔍i𒅌t.
But recently, with new𝔉 subclasses and optional rules added to the game, rangers are becoming more popular. Whether you loved the class from the early days of D&D 5e, or you've become interested in playing one after all the changes, there are some mistakes to stay clear of.
10 🐼 Lowering Your Wisdom Score
Some players view rangers as pure martial classes, but in reality, fighters make for much better archers than rangers. Because of this, some will prio༒ritize dexterity or strength and then constitution scores and put their highest stats on them, consequently lowering their wisdom score.
Ranger's spellcasting ability is wisdom, and a higher wisdom score can make their spells deadlier and harder to resist. In addition, many of the ranger's main skills such as perception and survival rely on wisdom. So it's better to put wisdom as your second-highest ability score after dexterity or strength.
9 Casting Multiple Concentrat🎃ion Spells
Rangers have a few iconic spells available to them. One of the being Hunter's Mark, alongside spells that empowers their attack such as Ensnaring Strike, Hail of Thorns, or Lightning Arrow. All of these spells are quite powerful, but there's a common mistake that some newer players make.
Both Hunter's Mark, and most spells that empower their attacks, are co🉐ncentration spells. Meaning that you can't cast two of them simultaneously. Most rangers like to start the combat by putting Hunter's Mark on their primary target, but they might lose it by mistake if they cast another concentration spell.
8 ♛ S﷽couting Too Far Ahead
Rangers are quite resourceful when it comes to exploring and scouting in nature. They can get proficiency in many relevant skill▨s such as stealth and survival, and their class features give them a considerable advantage in the wil🌸derness.
But don't overestimate your survivability when you're scouting ahead of your party. Either try to travel as a group with the use of spells such as Pass Without Trace or stay close enough to the rest of your party, so they can come to your help if you get into any trouble.
7 Casting Conjuration Spell Without Knowing Your💛 Options 🗹
At mid to high levels, rangers get access to conjuration spells such as Conjure Animals or Conjure Woodland Beings. These spells give you an option to 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:summon creatures of a certain type, and if you're not familiar with your options, choosing what to summon in the middle of combat can disrupt the flow of the game.
If you choose these spells and are planning to use them, speak to your DM beforehand to learn about different creat💧ures that you can summon, know their abilities, and have their stats ready bef💎ore you cast the spell.
6 Focusing Solely On Combat ﷽
Rangers have many features and abilities that encourage exploration and survival. While they can be quite competent in combat, if you put all your focus into fighting and optimiz꧙e your chara💦cter only for dealing damage, you will lose out on some of their utility features.
Other than optimization,﷽ some of these features require you toꦅ roleplay and interact with the world the way a ranger would do. Try to get comfortable within this role, and use the ranger abilities to help your party outside of combat.
5 Not Using Utility Spells 🐼
Rangers have a lot of powerful 🌳offensive spells, but most of them are concentration spells. A common mistake would be to only chose these spells for your character, and𝄹 not get a chance to use all of them.
Instead, it's better to choose only a few offensive spells, and allocate some of your resources to some great utility spells that rangers have access to such as Speak With Animals, Pass Without Trace, or Plant Growth.
4 Resting Alone In Thꦦe Wilderness
൩ Rangers are at their best out in the wilds, and while it can be a great thematic fit for them to be solitary and spend their time far away from others, in a game of Dungeons & Dragons, strength is i๊n numbers.
Rangers can usually find safe places to rest thanks to their high survival skill, but even in a safe place, the chances of ambush are not zero. Always stay with your party during short and long rests, and assign watches through the night, so you're not surprised in case of an attack.
3 Wearin𒀰g Armor ♛That Gives Disadvantage On Stealth
Rangers have proficiency with light and medium armors, and they can use shieldsꦇ. Some medium armors can give you a higher AC than light armors, but that higher AC usually comes with the cost of having disadvantage on your stealth checks.
This is not a worthwhile trade, as rangers can be much more effective in exploration and even in combat 𝓀if they can efficiently hide from their enemies. Stick with light armors in the early game, or try to save up your gold to buy a breastplate if you really need the extra AC.
2 😼 Only Relying On One Type Of Weapon 🦄
Rangers have proficiency with all weapons,168澳洲幸运5开奖网: giving them a lot of optioജns to choose from. They are most typically known to use bo🍰w and arrows, but 𒈔strength build is also a viable option for rangers who want to focus more on melee weapons.
Whatever type of weapon you choose as your main weapon, it's always helpful to have a backup. If you're using bows, then having a sword or rapier for situations where you can't use ranged weapons can be helpful. And if you are playing a strength-based melee build, having a few javelins or thrown weapons can help you reach more enemies.
1 Not Playing Ranger Because It's Weak
In the end, the worst mistake is to give in to the controversy and hatred that the ranger class might have among some groups. D&D is not about winning or playing the strongest character possible, and the fact that rangers might be weaker compared to other classes, sh𓆏ould not be the most important factor when making a character.
The ranger class has a lot of interesting and unique abilities to offer, and there has been a lot of new subclasses and optional features to answer some cr💯itique the cl🔴ass has attracted. If you enjoy the fantasy of the class, you are going to enjoy playing one regardless of how powerful they are.
