The next published Dungeons & Dragons adventure has been revealed by the Stream of Ey𒊎es livestream event. It is called  an💝d it is one of the rare adventures that will take place wholly within a city.

The title of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist refers to the fact that the gold coins which are used as currency in Waterdeep are referred to as dragons. The players will be given their initial quest by Volothamp Geddarm, who is one of the most iconic characters in the Forgotten Realms (and author of Volo's Guide To Monsters), which leads to them having to protect a large amount o🐻f treasure from those who would steal it and use it for nefarious ends.

The four people depicted on the cover of the book are the villains of the story, though you will likely only encounter one of them in the game. The villains are intended to be much more powerf🌼ul than the players in terms of combat ability so that the adventure cannot be won in a brute force fashion. It's up to the player to outthink the villains (and the dungeon master) and use their skills & wits to win the adventure. Included among those villains are Jarlaxle, a drow mercenary who appears in many of R.A. Sa🍃lvatore's novels, and Manchoon, a the mad clone of a mad archmade.

The vast majority of Dungeons & Dragons campaigns take place in the wilderness, with cities only being used as a place to sell gear. The fact that this adventure will take place in a city will totally change the dynamic of how the game is played, as the players cannot rely on the lawless nature of the wild where they can pretty much do as they please. Waterdeep is a city with its own laws and those who uphold them, which means that players cannot run around attacking people on the streets with impunity or using area-of-effect spells without care. The players will have to go about solving their solutions in a different mannerꦜ than normal, as not all issues can be solved with the edge of a blade.

Chris Perkins and Mike Mearls delve into Dragon Heist a bit more in this video:

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is an adventure with 🧜a much larger focus on puzzles and role-playing, which is a departure from a lot of the adventures that have been released so far. The dungeons filled with monsters will be taking a back seat to knowing when to pick your battles, which may not be to everyone's tastes. It's up to the people running each game to decide whether a smarter adventure is the kind that their players will enjoy.

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist will be released on the 18th September for $49.95.
