With E3 week finally behind us, we have some big and small titles to look forward to. While the likes of Breath of the Wild 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Starfield stole the show, the Devolver Forwarder and Wholesome Direct treated us to scores of indie games. However, there was one trend that was noticed throughout the showcase week, the number of non-violent games was oꦇn the rise.
analyzed each of the game announcements and bucketed them into violent and non-violent categories. Via this segreꦐgation the website deduced that 33% of the E3 and Summer Game Fest titles were non-violent, primarily thanks to the indies.
We saw a total of 349 games announced across the Summer Games Fest, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Ubisoft Forward, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Wholesome Direct, Devolver Forwarder, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Microsoft+Bethesda showcase, and the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Nintendo Direct. Gamesin✤dustry.biz considered 115 of these ཧgames non-violent. That’s way ahead of the 41 non-violent games out of 239 in 2019.
But wha🐬t is t𝔍he definition of a violent or non-violent game? The website came up with a detailed formula to identify a non-violent game:
- No title where you a🐻re required or encouraged to harm or kill another living entity.
- No ♏title with graphic or realistic depictions of violence.
- We have also counted cartoon violence, e.g. Mario Party mini-games that i♕nvolve knocking out the other players or Party Animals hurling each other off levels.
- Games around contact sports are💟 consider▨ed violent.
- Reference to unseen violent acts, e.g. a game where you are solving a previous murder, does 🍎not count as violent.
- Minimalis🃏t depictions or representations of conflict, e.g. a Hearthstone-style card game, do not count as violent.
- Games in which you give direct orders that lead to violenceꦐ, e.g. strategy titles or turn-based RPGs, are conside🦩red violent.
It should also be noted that announcements that showed no gameplay were𝓀 discounted.
“It's important to stress again that this endeavour is not intended to decry violence,” said the report. “It is to offer a look at just how much of the industry's output relies on selling the same fundamental mechanic: the ability ♉to fight and kill.”
The report also broke down the percentage of non-viol✤ent games showcased during each event. As the name suggests, the Wholesome Direct is in the lead with 63 non-violent games out of a total 76; that’s 83%. Devolver Digital was a distant second, with 37%, followed by Future Games Show, Nintendo Direct and Guerilla Collective.
C🌳onversely, Square Enix Presents, Koch Primetime, Capcom, and Gearbox all had zero non-violent ga🥀mes in the showcase.
