The Ultimate Team meta has remained unchanged for several years: pace is the most important asset to any team, and that applies to every player on the pitch. Last year we got the introduction of Lengthy, which made slower players with long legs a lot morᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚe usable. Lengthy strikers like Haaland and defenders like Araujo dominated the meta for the entire year. It was a nice change to see a deviation from the pace meta, even though in reality Lengthy was just another form of pace. Playstyles are way more game-changing, and I hope EA leans into the mechanic as we progress - adding playstyles to Team of the Week players and as poten🥀tial evolutions.

Playstyles are a fantastic addition to FIFA, or EA Sports FC 24 (I hate this name, I hate it), causing an impactful change to how we pick our squads in Ultimate Team. Or, at the very least, playstyles ꦺoffer a wider range of options from the usual pacey players. Each player can have a set number of playstyles, while certain players will have an advanced form of playstyle, known as a Playstyle+. It’s the best representation of certain players I’ve seen yet in FIFA: cards that actually playꦉ like their real-life counterparts.

Everyone talks about EA Sports FC 24 as if it's ♏nothing more than Ultimate Team, and that makes it difficult 🌃to get excited for it

There’s nothing quite like Trent’s whiꦏpped passes, or Son’s perfect finesse shots. Even the defenders who would usually be unusable are made more viable with good playstyles - I pl🌃ayed against Ginter last night, and he had the game of his life. A complete brick wall, even though he only has 60 pace. This makes sense. Just because you’re slow in real life doesn’t mean that your FIFA card should be complete shite.

Here are a few other examples of how playstyles have already changed๊ my team. I’m using the notoriously slow Rodri, because he has the Powershot+ trait. It’s so much fun to use from outside the box that I don’t even care that he can be a bit slow on the counterattack. Up top, we’ve got Benzema - an affordable top striker because of his current league - who comes with the ridiculous Finesse+ playstyle. Any finesse, from anywhere, goes into the net. At the back, I’m running Saliba - who comes with the coveted Anticipate and Jockey playstyles.

It’s interesting to watch the playerbase figure out which playstyles are the best. For defenders, a few savvy pro players have figured out that traits like Anticipate and Jockey are the most meta, whereas Finesse, Technical Dribbling, and Power Shot mean your attackers are more clinical in front of goal. The meta is always inevitable, but for these first few sweet weeks of FIFA - always the best part of Ultimate Tea🐭m, anyway - it’s fun to try out new cards that have previously been impossible to use.

The first evolution that gives a playstyle (Relentl🍎ess, for a winger) costs 50,000 coins or 1,000 FC Coins, which brings the cost in at around £10. It’s classic EA to paywall such a fun feature, but what are you going to do? People will probably spend that sort of money on upgrading their favorite cards, and the coin option is there for those who want to look after their wallets. That being said, we will likely see playstyles added to existing players with the plethora of promo cards destined for the next few months.

With the improvements to HyperMotion and the fun evolution cards, the gameplay of EA Sports FC 24 might be better than it’s been i꧟n a few years.ﷺ EA had to make a bold statement with FC 24, and while it is the same game as it always has been - let’s not beat around the bush - there have been some nice changes that will keep me interested at least until Christmas.
