Due to the vault having 1,000 people and only 100 rooms, it was originally believed that it was an experiment to see how hot bunking worked as a system for living quarters. The actual purpose of this vault is that it was marked as a control group used to protect and store individuals in a procedure called the Societal Preservation Program.

Fallout 2, unlike almost any other entry in the series, is a sequel to the original game. This means that you don't start in a vault, but Vault 13 can be considered the initial one considering it's the home of your character from that first game.
The game starts with the quest "Finish Temple Of Trials" which asks you to enter a temple and conquer everything it puts in front of you. Some things are cleared via combat, while others can be avoided with high enough stats in categories like Perception or Lo🦋ckpicking.
6 ♔ Fallout Tactics ಌ

In Fallout Tactics, the series' only foray into real-time strategy, you actually don't start the game in a vault. Instead, Vault 0 — sometimes referred to as the Calculator's Lair — is a location you can reach later on in this multiplayer PC game via Cheyenne Mountain.
Due to the nature of the gameplay, you don't have a starting quest either, but rather a tutorial that walks you through the mechanics of the game. Given that the series has shifted focus in favor of open-world RPGs since this game launched in 2001, it would be a refreshing change of pace to see a spin-off return to the gameplay of Fallout Tactics.
5 Fallout 3

Located in Washington D.C., Vault 101 is Fallout 3's starting location, where you begin your journey before venturing out into the world as the Lone Wanderer in search of your father. The vault was a failed experiment, as it was supposed to never open, a process that would allow the observation of the effects it would have on an overseer. Sadly, it was opened on numerous occasions, leading to an infestation of radroaches. Aptly named "Baby Steps," the game's first quest has you controlling a younger version of yourself as you experience the life of a child growing up in an underground vault.
4 ✃ Fallout: New Vegas

You don't technically start in Vault 11, but it is the first vault featured in the game and the focus of the opening cinematic you witness. Fallout Shelter was an experimental mobile game Bethesda released that offered fans a different take on the Fallout experience. You create and number your own vault, as the core of the game is focused on you growing and developing it in a way you see fit. The first quest you'll go on is called "A Settler Needs Your Help." It's a five-part quest, but it can't be started until you have access to level 40 dwellers. This is around the time in the mobile experience where you can send your vault dwellers out into the world in search of resources, information, and possible new vault occupants.
2 Fallout 4

It had its inhabitants cryogenically frozen, and the experiment was to see what the side effects of this process would be. Despite the atrocious situation that was the launch of Fallout 76, the game has grown and evolved since its release in 2018, with several expansions and patches to add new content to the game and work towards fixing its myriad issues. Players start in Vault 76, the rare vault where nothing too weird is going on. Its educated inhabitants came from academic, governmental, and military fields. "Reclamation Day," the game's first quest, has you setting out to reclaim the outside world, by leaving the vault and exploring the open world of Appalachia alongside other players.
