One of the best additions to Nintendo Switch Online is ♛the range of retro collections compiling games from older consoles and handhelds. These collections have allowed newer generations to experience classic ga😼mes from the past while giving longtime Nintendo fans another way to play some of their favourite childhood titles.

The classics of classics.

These retro collections have gradually rolled out across the Switch’s lifespan, meaning that some have far more games than others. However, it’𓄧s not just the quantity of the games in each collection that matters, but the quality as well. Simply put, some of these retro collections make that NSO subscription more worth it than others, even if they all provide a certain level of value to 🍌the service.

6 Game Boy

Now You’re Playing With Portable Power

The Game Boy singlehandedly🐎 ushered in the handheld gaming revolution, demonstrating just how fun playing games could be when you weren’t tethered to a TV or computer. But while the little grey brick could certainly have a strong library of games across its nearly 15-year lifespan, not a lot of them are present in its Nintendo Switc▨h Online Collection.

Sure, there are🌟 plenty of classic Game Boy games here – Super Mario Land, Tetris, the three Game Boy Zeldas, and the system’s Mega Man titles, just to name a few. But the lack of any meaningful Pokémon games and an abundance of filler titles does make the Game Boy NSO collection the least historically relevant at the moment.

5 ♛ 🧜Game Boy Advance

An Advanced Collection Of Classic Handheld Games

While the Game Boy Advance collection is currently the smallest on Nintendo Switch Online, it makes up for its relative lack of titles by leaning almost exclusively on hits. You’ll find plenty of the GBA’s absolute best games here, ranging from the system’s stellar Metroid titles to some of the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:best handheld RPGs ever developed in the Golden Sun duology.

Similar to the Gam🥂e Boy collection, this compilation would certainly benefit from the GBA’s mai♑nline Pokémon games as well as some more third-party content. But any service that lets you play Wario Ware, Inc: Mega Microgames is worth every penny.

4 🍒 Nintendo Entertainment System

Back To Where It All Began

There is no shortage of ways to play Nintendo Entertainment System games these days, but even so, the system’s NSO collection commits to making some of its deeper cuts as accessible as𝕴 its iconic titles. There’s something undeniably cool about being able to play Journey to Silius or Crystalis on the same collection as Super Mario Bros or The L🔜egend of Zelda.

With that said, some of these deeper cuts perhaps go a little too deep, and while it’s great that these lesser-known NES games are being preserved for a new generation, some of them fall more into the category of “forgettable filler” ♑than “hidden gems”. Still, the special challenges allow you to play some of the system’s best-known games in a quirky new way and add more value to experiences that have already existed for decades.

3 𝐆 Sega Mega Drive ༒

An Absolute Blast (Processing)

In fashion to the NES collection, you can very easily play many of these classic Sega Mega Drive games through other means. That isn’t to take anything away from the majesty of games like Phantasy Star 4, Shinobi 3, or the Sonic titles, ꩲonly to say that you can access them easily without having to dish out a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Where the Sega Mega Drive’s NSO collection really soars is how it excavates some truly wonderful titles that haven’t enjoyed the same re-release procession as the system’s most beloved classics. Crusader of Centy is one of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the best Zelda clones that you probably haven’t played and Mega Man: The Wily Wa🍎rs may contain the best versions of the first three games in that series. As the only non-Nintendo retro collecဣtion on NSO, this assembly of Sega Mega Drive games certainly holds its own.

A Rare Occurrence Worth Celebrating

There was much anticipation amongst Nintendo fans of a certain age when Nintendo 64 games were announced to be coming to NSO, but also a fair bit of trepidation. After all, so much of that console’s legacy comes from the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:games developed by Rare, and there was no guarantee tha🌸t Microsoft would play nice and allow those classic titles to come across.

Thankfully, there was no real cause for alarm, as this collection includes iconic Rare titles such as Goldeneye 007 and Jet Force Gemini alongside other Nintendo 64 heavyweights like Super Mario 64 and the pair of Ze🐷lda games. A great compilatio🍰n of games for such a beloved system

1 🀅 Super Nintendo Entertainment System

Super All The Way

Even with some third-party greats missing from this particular lineup (looking at you, Square Enix), the Super N🍒intendo collection on NSO has plenty of top-tier games to sink your teethꦬ into. The 16-bit era is often fondly remembered by gaming historians, and when you look at games like Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, and Earthbound, it’s easy to see why.

Even the deeper cuts on this collection likeꦗ Demon Crest and Breath of Fire are well worth your time. There’s a majestic symphony of excellent design, gor⛦geous pixel art, and endless replayability that permeates throughout many of these games, only further proving why the SNES will always hold a special place for so many gamers.
