The 2020 PC Gaming Show showed off a lot of promising games of all genres (and a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:guinea pig for some reason). But for all the impressive variety, a few titles were bound to steal the show. For many, Persona 4 Golden's sudden (but not very secret) release was the main event. Others marveled at the visuals of Mafia Definitive Edition or novelty of games like Weird West. Fans of tactical RPGs probably noticed Fae Tactics, a colorful grid-based game reminiscent of the GBA Final Fantasy Tactics spinoffs.

Fae Tactics takes place in a world that was once like our own, but is now ravaged after portals let Fae run rampant. These Fae aren't the adorable pixies of Disney, but rather a catchall term for several creatures of mythology. There are cruel harpies, greedy gremlins, and deadly horned squirrels (seriously, don't mess with the squirrels. The resulting visual style is a mix of post-apocalypse, anime, and Pokémon clone. And it's all rendered via pixelated sprites and vꦇibrant splash art.

The nature of these visuals and easy tutorial levels make Fae Tactics appear to be an easy, relaxing romp at first. The core gameplay is two opposing forces taking turns, moving a few spaces, and attacking until one side's leader units are all down. The player can field a team from a collection of cute, weird, and creepy Fae. But the game soon gives the player and the baddies access to all sorts of new tricks.

Forgoing an attack triggers the wait action, which can protect allies or guarantee a critical hit on the next turn. Spells can heal all friendlies, boost attack, or do AoE damage, and can be used in addition to a unit's standard attack. And of course, each creature has its own inherent element that counters or is weak to certain other elements. The player doesn't even get through the first story arc before they see enemy leaders making good use 🍸of spells and spawning reinforcements.

The enemy AI of Fae Tactics takes off the kid gloves pretty much as soon as the tutorial ends. It's not unfair by any means, but I was surprised to 💞see ear♏ly game enemies trying to divide and conquer my forces, as well as prioritize key aspects of the battlefield. Foes would flock to my downed leaders in an attempt to finish them off, and surround their own leaders to prevent the same. This was on Normal difficulty, too, so I can only imagine how Hard might up the ante.

Strategy RPG fans who miss optimizing job combinations in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance or playing Fire Emblem before it was a dating sim should love Fae Tactics. It captures the combination of tactical depth and colorfu🐼l characters that made the GBA era of those series so beloved. Just be sure to bring your best Fae, because those gremlins aren't playing.
