Epic was perfectly happy for that to be the reason for Peter Griffin's chiseled abs, but Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane may have recently let slip the real reason as to why Epic chose not to use his usual body. Speaking with IGN regarding his role in the recently released Ted TV show, McFarlane claims he was told that Epic "didn't have the budget" to create his normal body, before accidentally setting up a real life cutaway gag.
We all know that Epic is an extremely wealthy company at this point, making money from not only Fortnite, but several other projects and the Epic Game Store. It seems unlikely that Epic doesn't have enough money to somehow find a way to give us a lore accurate Peter Griffin, but it does suggest that Fortnite crossovers have their own budgets on which they have to work.
Using Peter Griffin's usual body would have been a bit of a challenge for Epic to overcome, what with him being larger than most other characters in the game. Many fans had assumed that Peter Griffin's normal width could've potentially made the skin unviable due to it having a larger hitbox, and it's possible Epic would've gone over budget trying to solve the problem. Thus, buff Peter Griffin was born.
As for how the whole collaboration came about, McFarlane says that someone had to explain to him what Fortnite actually is and what Peter Griffin would be doing in it. Thankfully, he liked the idea, otherwise we wouldn't actually have the crossover, but it's fun to see there are still some people out there with no idea what Fortnite actually is. How I envy them.
