For the last 15 years, being cast in a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:superhero movie was a sign for an actor that, to some degree, they had made it. It’s the difference between being Chris Hemsworth — internationally known, toplining movies — or Kevin McKidd, another actor seriously considered for the role of Thor who you probably haven’t heard of. But, as the cast of the Fantastic Four 🐼was officially announced this week, I couldn’t help thinking that it could be a curse for the four actors’ careers, not a gift.

The four stars are coming in with four different levels of fame. Pedro Pascal is the best known, having starred on two of the biggest shows of the 2020s so far, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Mandalorian and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Last of Us, and coming onto the scene with a splash in his supporting role in the undisputed biggest show of the 2010s, Game of Thrones. Playing Reed Richards is his big chance to make the move to movies where, until now, he hasn't had much success. He co-starred with Nicolas Cage in the meta action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which didn't connect at the box office, and played a key role in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Wonder Woman 1984, which got mixed reviews and released at exactly the wrong time to make an impression, arriving in December 2020, the depths of the first year of the pandemic, when most moviegoers hadn't gone back to theaters.

Vanessa Kirby, meanwhile, has supporting parts in two major franchises under her belt, with roles in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Fast & 🍒Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and the two most recent Mission: Impossible films. Those movies have largely done well, but she isn't the star in any of them. Playing Josephine in Ridley Scott's Napoleon was her biggest role in a tentpole movie so far, but that movie didn't make a ton of money in relation to its budget (though with movies produced by Apple, there is the caveat that they're primarily made for streaming, so any theatrical money is gravy).

Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn are both primarily known for their TV work. Moss-Bachrach is having a moment, with a recent Emmy win for his role as Richie (Cousin!) on The Bear, but he's been doing solid work for a long time. I first noticed him on Girls nearly a decade ago, and since then he's worked steadily, with roles in The Punisher, Andor, The Dropout, and the Jennifer Lawrence comedy, No Hard Feelings. Quinn is similarly hitting it big right now, with upcoming roles in Gladiator 2 and A Quiet Place: Day One. Most viewers are probably most familiar with him for his turn as Eddie Munson in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Stranger Things' fourth season.

Though these actors are all at varying levels of fame, they all aren't yet movie stars. They may have been in big movies, but none have been the lead in a successful blockbuster. In that way, this cast makes a lot more sense than the cast that was rumored last year, which included Adam Driver as Reed Richards and Margot Robbie as Sue Storm. Driver and Robbie are already big stars that can get a movie greenlit on the strength of their name. They don't need to take on a Marvel role. But it has been a logical way to take a step up to the big leagues for over a decade (and get a good payday), so it makes sense for these four.

The question is: is an MCU movie (or a superhero movie of any kind) still the way to take that next step? Signing onto a Marvel movie now feels a little like helicoptering onto the deck of the Titanic after it hit the iceberg. It was, undoubtedly, a big, impressive ship. But is now really the time to bet on it being unsinkable? The MCU is coming off two flops with Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels. And the news isn't any better for other superhero movies. DC is currently suffering through a string of disappointments, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom underperforming, and The Flash, Black Adam, Blue Beetle, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods outright bombing. Madame Web is tracking to earn less than Bob Marley: One Love this weekend, and I can't imagine Kraven the Hunter will do much better. Even for heroes that audiences love, box office is on a downward trend, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earning less than their predecessors. The money may still be good, but the career benefits are up for debate.

It's possible that Fantastic Four is an exception. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Spider-Man and Batman movies have still done well in recent years, and while Fantastic Four isn't on the same level, it is a well-known name. But, the last Fantastic Four bombed, and while the two previous movies were more successful, they didn't light the world on fire either. Fans have been waiting so long for the MCU's take on Fox characters like FF and the X-Men, that ൩the movie could do well anyway. But, betting on any superhero movie at this point seems like a risky choice.
