Ubisoft has just confirmed a longstanding fan theory about The Jackal, Far Cry 2's ostensible villain. The theory is that The Jackal and Jack Carver, the protagonist from the original Far Cry are one and the same. Now we know for sure that's exactly the case courtesy of Far Cry 2's creative director.
“The Jackal is actually supposed to be Jack Carver from the original Far Cry,💖” said Clint Hocking, Far Cry 2 creative director, for its new Insider St⭕ories series.
“Jack Carver in the original Far Cry was this shifty, smuggler, gun runner kind of crook. The idea was [the Jackal] is just him, 10 years later or something, after he's seen whatever he saw on this island [during the events of Far Cry]. Maybe it was drug-induced, maybe it's post-traumatic stress disorder, or maybe it's real. But the idea is, a decade later, he has leveled up his smuggling game, and he's gotten embroiled in this conflict.”
Even without Hocking's confirmation, there was plenty of evidence suggesting that Carver would later become The Jackal. First, the end of Far Cry Instincts features Carver taking a box full of conflict diamonds, which turn out to be a major plot point in Far Cry 2. And second, there are a bunch of texture files in Car Cry 2 that are labeled "jackcarver," even though Jack is never really named in-game. Fans have long put two-and-two together, but now we know for sure.
IGN has a bunch of other interesting tidbits in its new feature video, so take a look if you want to learn more about the history of Far Cry's villains.
