Fatal Frame, the game series about creeping around haunted houses/villages and capturing ghosts, is receiving a movie adaptation. While this isn't movie to be released (as one with the same name premiered in Japan in 2014) Christophe Gans is 🌠working on a new adaptation "which will not uproot th🌼e game's haunted house setting." The film will take place in Japan.
The Fatal Frame series features some of the scariest survival horror games out there, ranking next to the Silent Hill and Resident Evil franchises. The series has sold more than one million copies, with the most recent entry coming o🥀ut in 2014. However, the producer in producing a new game♎ for the Switch.
As to why Fatal Frame is such a scary series to play, it comes down to the gameplay- players are armed with only a camera and must seek out the ghosts, actively taking photos to deal damage. Instead of having a gun, it's a frantic f🥂ight for survival vs. a wailing entity that can hurt you. In addition, ghosts can pop up at any time... even in a save room. There is no respite from the dead.
Unfortunately, when it comes to the Fatal Frame movie, director Christophe Gans had little to offer besides not "uprooting the game" from its Japanese haunted house roots. We've already seen various haunted house movies such as The Grudge, w🐭hich was recently remade and boasts a pretty low Metacritic score. The title retreaded an old idea without adding anything new, and even butchered the ghosts' personality (thin as they were to begin with).
A Fatal Frame movie, on the other hand, has the potential to be fantastic, given the premise of the camera. If the source material is taken seriously and each ghost is given a personality it could weave multiple backstories into the narrative. We'll have more information if and when a release date draws near. Until then, looks like it's time to load up some of the old Fatal Frame games.
