The thing is, Mog is actually an optional character, and it’s quite easy to miss recruiting him if you beeline straight for the main goals of the story. This is true both in the World of Balance and the World of Ruin. Here’s how to get♎ this fuzzy dancer into your party.

Updated April 24, 2023: Of all the characters in FF6, Mog is one of the hardest to recruit. Since so many people are discovering FF6 for the first time thanks to the Pixel Remaster collection coming to consoles, we thought we'd take another look at this guide to make sure it's readable and accurate.

How To Recruit Mog In The World Of Balance

Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster Mog Cyan Terra Setzer

Yܫou will first encounter Mog and his Moogle buddies at the beginning of the game, where they help Locke fend off some imperial soldiers to defend an unconscious Terra. Many hours later, however, it’s possible to recruit Mog permanently.

You can recruit Mog only after you have finished the story events at the Magitek Research Facility. Return to Narshe and head to the cliffs where Terra first showed off her Esper form. You’ll encounter Mog and L𒊎one Wolf, who is holding him hostage.

You have a choice here: you can either save Mog and get him as a party member, or save Lone Wolf and receive a Gold Hairpin for your troubles.

While it is worth noting that the Gold Hairpin is a very powerful Relic that halves the cost of any spell you cast, you do have to give up a party member for it. In addition, you’ll be able to get more Gold Hairpins later on in the game anyway - they can be found in chests inside Mt. Zozo and the Ancient Castle, and even won in the Coliseum by𒈔 betting a Crystal Orb, Dragon Horn, or Ribbon.

How To Recruit Mog In The World Of Ruin

Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster Mog in the Moogle Cave

In the World of Ruin, you’ll start with only Celes and must re-recruit all of your past allies. Mog can be found in Narshe once again, inside the mines. He will rejoin upon talking to him, and you'll also get hints as to the locations of the Midgarsormr Magicite and Umaro, another recruitable character.

You can find the Midgarsormr Magicite and Umaro after thawing Valigarmanda on the cliff behind Narshe. If you have Mog wiꦍth you, you can recruit Umaro after♕ beating him in battle.

Even if you save Lone Wolf, you will be able to recruit Mog in the World of Ruin. Doing this will nab you an extra Gold🗹 Hairpin, but means that you will never be able to learn all of Mog’s Dances, as Water Harmony is only available in the World of Ruin.
