Upon arriving in the sun-drenched paradise, our party finds a hotel room and is🐽 promptly told that in order to step foot on the beach where Professor Hojo currently resides, they need to wear the appropriate attire - super cool swimsuits. But you can’t just buy attire like normal people. Instead, the authorities ask you to complete a variety of minigames in order to earn a voucher which can then be used to purchase swimwear for each character. This doesn’t feel like a very smart way to do business, but I nodded along and did what I was told like a good JRPG twink. After playing cards, a spot of Red XIII football, and partaking in a cute shooting gallery, I had enough to buy all three characters their two swimsuit variants.
Once you beat the game, booths will appear in Chocobo ranches and🥃 towns that allow you to wear swimsuits and other such outfits in the open world. Some weapons won’t be viewable depending on the attire though, so keep that in mind.
What’s The Deal With The Swimsuits in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?
Then I was off to the beac𒆙h. Barrett already has a sailor outfit handy and Red XIII is a dog (some people say he’s a cat, they’re wrong), so there was no need to worry about them, while Yuffie doesn’t join the party until after you meet with Hojo on the beach. There is no rush to go down to the beach, as Rebirth wants you to try on each swimsuit and take in the sunny vibes. There is even a funny affinity bonus to be earne🌠d from either Tifa or Aerith if you happen to pick the same penchant for swimwear as one of the two girls. That’s one way to find out Tifa loves Cloud topless…
Earning the swimsuits is also done in separate gameplay sequences as both Cloud and with Tifa and Aerith as a duo. The game describes the girl’s outing as a ‘date’ and I will cling to all the sapphic crumbs Rebirth is willing to give me. It also makes narrative sense, given Cloud has a few errands to attend to away from the larger party. After taking a shower and a small nugget of narrative exposition, the besties hit the town in search of swimsuits.ꦡ You can jump between them at any moment with a touch of the shoulder button, leading to some wonderful voice lines and interactions between the two. I know they’re only shopping and completing a bunch of minigames, but I love how Rebirth gives time for its female characters to shine like this, removed from the main narrative where they can simply have fun and be themselves.
They’re having so much fun in spite of the tragic circumstances that await them, knowing if only for a brief moment, that it’s okay to kick back and have fun. Rebirth is a master of tonal shifts, letting its ensemble cast joke around and look silly while still taking time to🍨 develop them into dramatic powerhouses. Past entries in the series have struggled to strike this balance, and even the 1997 classic doesn’t manage it, but this reimagining nails what fans want to see and the story it intends to tell, and nothing will stand in the way of that.
Sun’s Out, Sephiroth’s Out
When the game releases later this week, I fully expect social media to be an explosion of discovery and fascination as the community obsesses over these characters and many of the interactions they have, likely picking up on things I never noticed during my time with it so far, despite the fact I’m already approaching the 80-hour mark. Famitsu only released a brief sliver of content exploring the Costa del Sol chapter,☂ and it was more than enough to send fan artists and stans into overdrive. I can’t scroll through my feed right now without a random account posting curated screenshots or fancams, or artists taking Aerith, Tifa, and Cloud and presenting them in their own distinct rendition. While many of us are evidently simping for these characters, there is something ultimately wholesome about the situation. We are looking respectfully, and love seeing the characters before us in cool outfits far more than we’re wanting to sexualise them.
Square Enix leans into this warm familiarity, hence why, unlike any other section in the game, it has released footage and screenshots from these brief interactions knowing that fans will not be normal about it. We will latch on, obsess, and read into everything far too much thanks to how much we love these characters and this universe. The finished game leans into this too, especially with Tifa and Aerith, as the two get up to different hijinks and try on new outfits for the hell of it. In Junon Harbor when Cloud must disguise himself in the original, the two girls play a much larger role in this military kerfuffle this time around. It’s cute, over th💎e top, and once again walks the tonal tightrope with ease.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth understands the 💜power it holds over fans, 🌄but so far hasn’t used this authority for ill, instead choosing to develop characters and make us fall in love with them all over again. Swimsuits be damned, although I imagine they definitely helped.
