At first glance, Tonberries don't seem like they should be the most frightening creature in the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Final Fantasy universe. They're just little guys; tiny dudes with flat green skin, egg-shaped yellow eyes, and nondescript brown robes. But… then you spot the knife.
Our Little Green Frenemies
Like Yoda in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Attack of the Clones, Tonberries seem harmless until you piss them off. In the original 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Final Fantasy 7 and Remake, you knew you were in for a whooping when a Tonberry showed u🅺p. One hit from a Tonberry would crater your HP, dropping your health down to one point. The creature is similarly powerful in Remake, in the one scene where it shows up.
I've played 25 hours of Rebirth and have only seen a Tonberry once, but the way it's used shows that 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Square Enix fully understands the terror the creature conjures up and hints at its iconic status in the world of FF7. In the game's eighth chapter, Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, Red XIII, and Yuffie finally arrive at the Gold Saucer, a key location from the original game. When the rest of the gang head out to explore the amusement park, Barret takes Cloud to the resort's hotel so the spiky-haired hero can get some rest. But, as soon as you reach the area where the hotel is located, something is off. Instead of the scenic, sunshine-y terrain you might expect around a luxurious resort, the hotel looks haunted. It's like something out of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Luigi's Mansion, and it immediately feels like Halloween once you arrive. I've already mentally added it to my 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:catalog of great games to revisit once the spookiest time of the year rolls around🌌.
Michael Myers But Cuddly
When Barret and Cloud arrive at their room, there's a Tonberry figurine standing guard. I inspected it carefully to make sure it wasn’t real. And, after Barret left, I opened the closet door and found that it didn't open into a closet at all. Instead, it revealed a black wall, with a two-dimensional Tonberry emerging from the painted shadows below.
This moment clarifies the role of Tonberries in the Final Fantasy universe. They aren't just another enemy. They're more like a ghost or one of the Universal monsters. They're the Wolfman, Dracula, The Mummy — but in a cute, green package. In the same way that kids drape a sheet over their heads or wear a pair of fangs for Halloween, Tonberries are something frightening, but iconic, within the world of FF7.
That's how Tonberries have always seemed to me. They're the enemy that cause your fight-or-flight response to kick in as soon as they appear. But, their simple design, and even simpler choice of weapon, makes them memorable. When you see that green head, those yellow eyes, that little knife, you know you need to get out of there. In fact, I want Square Enix to drop the idea of making a Kingdom Hearts movie, and focus instead on getting a Tonberry horror film on our screens ASAP.

Final Fa𝕴ntasy 7 Rebirth And The Beauty Of An Unreliable Narrator
The ending of Rebirth teases for very big ♍th✅ings for Cloud and Aerith.
