One needs only to sidestep the Pokemon series entirely to declare 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Final Fantasy 7 the most popular Japanese role-playing game of all time. Even when we allow for Pikachu and pals, Squaresoft's seminal epic makes a compelling case for being one of the most influential video games in this medium's brief but brilliant history.

At the heart of this decades-long love for FF7 is a sprawling cast of characters, many of whom are rich with presence and develop in meaningful ways. As luck would have it, each of the game's party members, as well as the nefarious villain Sephiroth, has at least one line of dialogue that seems to perfectly encapsulate them. (The same likely holds true for much of the sizable supporting cast as well, but that's a list for another day, perhaps.)

As we take a look at these quality quotes, we'll use several of Final Fantasy 7 Remake's stunning character models — because how could we not? But bear in mind, this is 100 percent about the original game.

10 𒆙 Yuffie Kisaragi 🧔

Yuffie Kisaragi in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

"Cloud, put me in your party, so I can get off this ship."

It's easy to remember FF7's Yuffie Kisaragi primarily for her unquenchable greed for the party's Materia. She isn't exactly subtle about it. Completing the optional Wutai questline helps to clarify just why she's so adamant about this act of thievery, however, and for the remainder of the game, players can freely focus more on her other quirks.

One of these is her motion sickness. Once the party has acquired the airship Highwind, Yuffie often struggles to keep herself from feeling ill. One of her pleas to be chosen as an active party member really speaks to the heart of the character — Yuffie is willing to go off and do hero things strictly from a utilitarian perspective. What's a little risking-life-and-limb if it means no more nausea?

9 Vincent Valentine 𝕴

Vincent Valnetine looking dramatic in a fire from Final Fantasy 7

"Hearing your stories has added upon me yet another sin."

Whether it's his slick outfit, his lukewarm demeanor, or simply the fact that he transforms into monsters in battle, most fans fall for Vincent Valentine to some extent or another. It's possible to play through the entirety of Final Fantasy 7 without ever learning more than a cursory overview of why exactly he slept inside a coffin for three full decades, and players who do so will probably just think of him as an amusingly edgy dude with a gun.

That's not an unfair assessment, but those who venture deeper will discover a deeper man who sees his role in the past as a series of sins in need of atonement. So it goes, then, that when he's first woken up by Cloud and friends and learns who they are and where they're from, Vincent speaks the words of this great quote. The world is in a bad way, and as far as he's concerned, Vincent's partly why.

8 Cait Sith

Cait Sith 2X Cut FF7

"What may be a few to you was everything to those who died."

When Cait Sith remarks to Barret that the Avalanche leader's attempt to spread a pragmatic view of a terrible tragedy is futile, it's hard to say whether it's Reeve or the automaton in control of the body. Barret tries to cope with the knowledge that people lost their lives due to Avalanche's brazen actions by looking at the bigger picture, but it's a powerful moment when Cait Sith rebuffs the idea, and somehow it feels like these words are striking from a position of both the cat and its forlorn puppeteer.

7 Red XIII

Red XIII after being rescued in Final Fantasy 7.

"Any way you look at it, I'd say I make a fine human being."

One of the most beautiful things about Star Trek — bear with us for a moment here — is that it often includes a character who represents an alien perspective, the psychological 'other' whose surface-level behavior may at times mask their true literary purpose, which is to analyze humans and point things out about us that we might not have realized on our own.

Final Fantasy often toys with this as well and nowhere is it quite so fully realized as with FF7's lion-dog pal, Red XIII. This pupper's wise beyond his years, often providing some comedic or insightful quip about our species. Does that make him Avalanche's very own Spock? Maybe.

6 Cid Highwind ✨

Original Final Fantasy 7 Cid lighting dynamite with a cigarette

"No, I guess if I had to choose, I'd put my money on the power of science."

Cid's a lot of things in FF7, but most of all he's the embodiment of humanity's pioneering spirit. His pure love for science, for the dream of reaching outer space and one day traveling among the stars, is all a bunch of starry-eyed drivel to most of Shinra's top brass.

In a world where magic still runs rampant and funding for the space program is minimal at best, Cid's frustration is palpable. When he's asked to compare the two — magic and science, the great powers of FF7's universe — the master engineer puts his foot down fully in favor of the practical, the applicable, the technological.

5 Sephiroth

sephiroth in final fantasy 7

"Out of my way. I'm going to see my mother."

Sure, our selection for Sephiroth's most perfectly fitting quote might lack the flair of several of his more frequently cited lines. There's nothing in here about death, destruction, becoming a god. Nothing about returning to the Planet. Nothing about reality and illusions.

But this is kind of the crux, isn't it? This is mere hours after Sephiroth pieces together his birth, his gift, his purpose. This is him beginning to revere the creature called Jenova, and ultimately using it for his schemes. This is the moment in Cloud's past that Sephiroth transforms from an aloof and somewhat Machiavellian war hero to a completely unforgivable despot. Sometimes, the catalyst is more important than the consequences.

4 Barret Wallace 🤡

A close shot of Barret in FF7 Remake.

"I know you got problems... hell, we all do. But you gotta understand that there ain't no gettin' offa this train we're on, till we get to the end of the line."

Barret's another character who is most commonly quoted for his off-the-wall comments rather than phrases that define who he is as a person. The Avalanche leader's got a real way with profanity.

The honorable Mr. Wallace, however, is actually a treasure trove of philosophical discourse. He starts off justifying dark means because they'll lead to a hypothetically brighter end but develops into someone with a more three-dimensional sense of heroism over time.

In the final hours of the game, leave it to Barret to use a train metaphor to remind Cloud that it's their collective destiny to save the world or die trying.

3 ✅ 💃 Tifa Lockhart

final fantasy vii remake tifa lockhart

"Words aren't the only way to tell someone how you feel."

Being a Tifa fan can be tough to bear on replays of Final Fantasy 7. By then, you've had it spelled out for you that her recollection of the past doesn't match Cloud's, and that her concern for his mental state causes her to shroud and protect him from things that might shatter his fragile perspective.

So much of what drives Tifa is tied to watching over a childhood friend. She endures a great deal of pain while traveling with Cloud and the others, constantly aware something is amiss but needing to wait for the right time to make heads or tails of it all and save him from his own twisted memories. For all Cloud brushes off, Tifa doesn't need his words; she can see in the way he behaves that he's in turmoil.

2 Aerith Gainsborough 🅠

Aerith holds out a flower as thanks.

"I'll be going now. I'll come back when it's all over."

We'd be hard-pressed to pick anything other than these haunting final words Aerith shares with Cloud while she's on her way to meet her fate at the City of the Ancients. There's a knowing sorrow to it, an unmistakable tone.

Away Aerith goes, into the light at the end of a forest, north to make her prayer, the prayer that would rescue a dying world — in due time. And just as she promises, the slain sacrificial saint returns, if briefly, at the very end of Final Fantasy 7, a flash of her first appearance in the game's opening moments, a reminder that she was the one whose communion with the Planet not only summoned Holy but affected the Lifestream itself.

1 Cloud Strife ꦆ 🃏

cloud strife close up

"All right, everyone, let's mosey."

Throughout the majority of the adventure, Cloud is living a lie; it's only when things are at their darkest for him and Tifa gives her all that our hero learns to embrace his true self. Cloud isn't just the spiky-headed and angst-filled icon of sorrow that some may think he is. Deep down, he's actually pretty goofy. A far cry from the very picture of disinterest he forcefully portrays earlier on.

In the lead-up to the final battle with Sephiroth and Jenova, the moment comes for Cloud to say something cool. Something stoic. Something inspirational. And frankly, he does, in his own little way. "Let's mosey" comes from the heart, not the cover persona of an enigmatic loner whose only love is cold hard cash.

"Let's mosey" is not something you would ever hear from the lips of John Wayne or David Bowie. More like Peter Falk or Robin Williams. Cloud's real heroism shines beautifully and awkwardly.
