Double and Triple status are among the best buffs in Final Fantasy 8, as they allow for a character to cast magic twice and three times in a row, respectively. This normally comes with a downside, as you'll be eating through your limited pool of magic twice and three times as fast.
But these two Expend abilities prevent that, by allowing you to use only one precious stock of magic and casting that multiple times in a row. It's especially potent when combined with healing and support spells such as Curaga, Protect, Shell, Aura, and Haste, ensuring that the entire party is covered while saving tremendously on stock.
8 Ammo-RF
The best of the refinement abilities by far, solely for the fact that it's the only way to obtain some of the best ammo in the game: Pulse Ammo. Not only does this precious commodity activate Irvine's strongest Limit Break Hyper Shot, but it's also the only way to unlock Squall's best weapon, the Lionheart.
And there are scores of other ammo to gain for Irvine's Shot as well, such as Flame Shot, easily the best way to take care of Malboros without expending precious Pulse Ammo. And gaining Quick Ammo, then combining its use with the Vit 0 status ailment means that Irvine can potentially deal 120,000 points of damage.
7 ST-D🔥e𒀰f-Jx4
Though any of the junction magic abilities are useful, Status Defense Junction x4 is easily the best. Normally there's no way to gain perfect coverage on multiple status ailments, as junctioning 100 stocks of Esuna will net only about 40 percent protection to all statuses.
But this ability lets players junction up to four, which mean✱s that characters will be protected against some of the most debilitating status ailments such as Petrify, Confuse, Blind, Berserk, Stop, Vit 0, and Curse. This is an absolute necessity when fighting a Malboro, bringing th♛e fight from near impossible to simply annoying.
6 Abilityx4
Most likely one of the best support abilities of the game, it enables a party member to equip two additional abilities. This allows for a character to have tons of𝔍 options in what they can choose from, as well as allowing for some nice customiza💯tion options.
Though Rosetta Stones, items that teach this ability, are hard to come by, thanks to GF Bahamut having the skill automatically you really only need it for two additional characters' GFs.
5 Card Mod
The best of the M⛎odify abilities, this converts a Triple Triad card into items. And with high-level cards, the items obtained are some of the best in the game, with quantities that surpass what could be normally acquired through normal magic refinement abilities.
Even better is if players complete the CC Group side quest, which unlocks the corresponding NPCs in Ragnarok during Time Compression♈. This means that if you modify a rare card, you can win it back again from one of the members and infinitely make more of those rare items.
4 Call Shop
During Time Compression, the NPC Joker is the only way to access both regular and Junk Shops as all other towns and cities are completely inaccessible. And while this𝕴 is perfectly acceptable for Junk Shops, his normal shop 𒉰is rather basic in supplies.
But with Call Shop, you get access to every single shop you've visited in the game along with their unique catalogs. It's especially handy paired with the Familiar ability since it ensures you have access to plenty of rare items.
3 ꦛ Haggle/Sell-High/Familiar
These three abiliti൲es are absolutely priceless in getting the most out of your shopping experience, as they allow you to buy items at discounted prices, sell your war✱es at higher prices, and unlock rarer items unique to each shop.
They're especially paired well with the Call Shop ability, since resources are a bit harder to come by due to the unique state of the game world. You'll always have access to some of the best items in the game without having to pay such absorbent prices. 2 Mug
This is one of the best abilities in the game, bar none. Characters with this ability can replace their normal Attack command with the Mug command, meaning that as you strike you also steal an item from an enemy. In fact, getting Mug as soon as possible in the game is the only way to make each characters' ultimate weapons early on, as you'll be able to steal items you normally wouldn't have access to at that point. The most important ability to have in the game, and ironically the least explained one. For a paltry 10 AP, you can significantly boost the power of every GF's attack. Unlike in other Final Fantasy titles, the purpose of 8's lengthy summoning sequences is to buy more time for you to boost its damage output.
During the sequence, you rapidly tap the indicated button to increase the number as high as possible, pausing when there's an "X" over it. Not only does this keep GF attacks viable until endgame, but it increases Eden's already powerful attack hit to an absolutely monstrous 250 percent damage.
