According to Midori, development on the Final Fantasy 9 remake wasn't canceled during Square Enix's big reshuffle and that development is actually "very far along."
Final Fantasy 9's Remake May Be Revealed Soon
Unfortunately, Midori doesn't know much more about the title than that, other than that development of the title was originally outsourced before Square Enix pulled it in-source due to being upset with its progress. We can assume its scope won't be as grand as the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, seeing it doesn't appear to be split up into three parts, but there is the chance it will keep its turn-based combat system.
As for when the thing will finally be unveiled, Midori claims that Square Enix is planning to show off some titles during the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase this week, but whether the Final Fantasy 9 remake is part of that lineup, we'll have to wait and see. They also think that Square Enxi could possibly plan to release the game this fiscal year, making an upcoming announcement likely, but this is also up in the air at the moment.
