Not all characters are created equal, and that's certainly true of the earlier games. While vast advances in both graphics and voice acting have us at the edge of our seat with the newer games, the lack of all that was equally tꦍerrifying for us as kids. For some reason, reading a sinister line from an antagonist and watching them through those gritty, 90s graphics gave us more nightmares than any modern horror.
With that being said, there were undoubtedly some villains that didn't exactly hold their worth as far as true evil was concerned. There were just some things ღthat our least favorite villains lacked, whether it was a menacing appearance or a striking, wicked one-liner. While there were no horrible antagonists, per se, there were quite a few that didn't make the cut. What we cared about as kids were the villains who would keep us up at night with their 2D glares, their well-formulated villainous statements, and their s♊eemingly mocking qualities. Everyone has their favorites, but this isn't about favorites... It's about the battle between who gave us nightmares, and who left us yawning.
10 Besꦫt: Kefka
We all remember watching the first opening scene for Final Fantasy VI and wondering what the heck a clown was doing in a FF game. Little did we know, Kefka was soon to be the villain of our nightmares, turning into somewhat of a JRPG Joker. His goal was obvious: Destroy the world. While our tiny protagonists could hardly hold a candle to this multi-park boss fight, it wasn't just his appear♋ance that scared the daylights out of us - it was his boss ෴music that really had us reeling.
9 🧸Worst: Barthandelus 🅘
Barthandelus wasn't just unimpressive, he was downright strange. The weirdness of it all was plenty to take after what's considered one of the least successful games (and most hated, according to players). The transf🐈ormation of an old geezer as a villain into an organ with some man💮nequin heads wasn't exactly scary. Rather, it resembled some sort of steampunk junk-a-thon, a giant hunk of somethin' with some random parts thrown in here and there. That's not to say he wasn't a formidable opponent - but that's another article.
8 📖 Best: Sephiroth
You already knew that 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Sephiroth would undoubtedly make this list. It's not necessarily his appearance that got him here, though. While he's quite beautiful as a villain (those Mako eyes are something we're still not over), it's his outright menacing confidence that had us nervous during every cutscene. He was pulling the strings and manipulating the entire plot, playing games with people's lives, and it wasn't until Advent Children that ✤we realized how truly sinister he could be... And now we🦩're counting down the days until we meet his face again in the remake.
7 Worst: Sin 🦩
Sin was a villain that, similar to Barthandelus, was a bit odd. The only difference is that Sin actually made sense in the grand scheme of the story. Final Fantasy X is well-loved by fan🌞s and was also the first in the series with voice acting (we refuse to acknowledge Tidius x 🅷Yuna's laugh-fest), making it that much more engaging. However, Sin, this slow-moving evil incarnate destined to rise once again to destroy the world, was simply not at the top of our 'most feared' list.
6 Bes𝔉t: Garland
Garland was the stuff that medieval dreไams were made of. He carried a solid character design and actually left us with the feeling that we were in for trouble. For an earlier game, this antagonist is yet another that's well-loved - as is his theme music.
When this boss battle began,🌼 you knew you were i𓂃n for the long haul, if not in for a few surprises along the way. That goes without saying that we low-key wish Garland was a playable protag rather than an antag, because wielding him would be totally epic.
5 Worst:🦩 Shadow Lord
Uninspired, at best. Shadow Lord looked like something that had been scrapped for a Dark Souls game and just didn't compare when sandwiched in between his counterparts. As far as his backstory and malicious intent, the monster was a king. As for his character design, it was scary, but nothing that had us quaking in our boots. His power as a da🃏rk mage was unmatched, but we only wish that his appearance matched the darkness that surrounded him... or came from him. In one shot. Enough to kill off an entire party.
4 🥃 Best: Ultimecia
When it comes to outright terrifying character designs, Square Enix (or Squaresoft, back then) did not hold back when it came to the drawing board. While is said to be a vastly underrated game according to fans, Ultimecia's appearance - and her strength -🉐 can'ꩲt be denied.
Her 'pretty' sorceress form is creepy, but her ultimate form - complete with a hanging sorceress that likely inspired Anima, crossed with a parasite- was more than enough to make us scoot back♌ from our TV screens just a bit. Furthermore, her boss theme was one that we still can't listen to while we're alone at night.
3 Wor🌠st: Vayne𝓰 Solidor
There are plenty of fans who have their own opinions on Final Fantasy XII's story (or lack thereof), but we're not here to argue whether the game was good or bad. We're he🃏re to talk about antagonists, and the man of the hour for this game happens to be Vayne Solidor. The reason he ranks so low is because... well, just look at him. While his intent was pretty bad, it wಌasn't mind-blowing, as he didn't even truly come into play until the end of the game. And speaking of games, the name of his was politics, and that's just not terrifying.
2 Best: Cloud Of Darkness🌸
The claim to fame for Final Fantasy III is Cloud of Darkness. While her name might not imply anything remotely close to her appearance, this is one apparition we would not want to see flying toward us. As per most of these games, her intent was to destroy the world... but she planned to do it with sickeningly green skin, Medusa-style hair, and tentacles. And let's be honest - anyth🍬ing with tentacles is automat🎀ically 10x creepier.
1 Worst: Exdeath 💝
Exdeath was a pretty villain, to say the least. Much like Seymour and Kuja, he was pretty to look at and resembled what we'd imagine a flamboyant knight to look like. His character design was nothing short of creative, but he definitely wasn't anything that we were afraid of. If anything, we were intrigued and drawn in by his brightly-colored armor, unique weapon, and unusually bold choice of a cape. It was like the genie from Aladdin met that reanimated knight from Goosebumps and thus, Exdeath was born.
