Everyone assumed that remaking a 23-year-old game for modern consoles would require making some changes, but the sheer scale of changes to🌞 the Final Fantasy VII Remake --ꦍ from its graphics and battle system to its story and characters -- was far beyond what the average gamer expected.
And that's just in the first part of the game, which was released in April -- two more parts are due to release, and even more changes to the game are expected to appear.
Recently, producer Yoshinori Kitase and co-director Naoki Hamaguchi spoke with The Guardian about why they made the changes they did, and made hints at what's in store.
Many of the changes to the plot were made for pacing reasons - in a three-part game, it's important to set the stage early on for important parts in the later plot.
"I did feel that the Shinra company executives and the Turks who will appear again in later parts of the story needed to be portrayed in greater detail, the same way a✃s the three members of Avalanche," Kitase said 💎in the interview.
A similar explanation was given🃏 for the earlier appearances of Sephirot🦩h.
"In the original game, Sephiroth did not make an appearance in the section of the story t♈old he🉐re, but we changed it to have him appear from the start, in order to position him playing an important role over the whole of the Remake project," said Kitase.
As f♋or whether there would be any major departures from the main course of the plot, Kitase was tight-lipped, saying that he hopes to keep discussion going among fans before the next installment🍒s are released.
Kitase also said that while the COVID-19 pandemic has caused some issues with development of the second part of the remake, he doesn't believe it will cause any major problems with the upcoming release.
"At this current time, the team are still making the next game via remote working," Kitase t🔯old The Guardian. "Our performance will temporarily drop below 100% efficiency because of this, but I do not think there should be a big impact in the long term."
