The end of the year is quickly approaching, and with it, the deadline for completing my 2023 New Year’s resolutions. I’m doing fairly well on many of them. I wanted to listen to 52 new albums and 52 old albums (as in, released before 2023) by year’s end and I accomplished that months ago. Ditto listening to 365 new songs (I’ve almost quadrupled that number), and I’ꦯm close to my goal of reading 52 books.
But my job at TheGamer tends to encourage me to play widely so that I have new things to write about. That isn’t always conducive to finishing games, though, which means that I’ve only fini𓆉shed 36 of the 52 𓆏games I wanted to complete in 2023. Gulp.
The good news is that I have significant time in several of the games I started this year, which means that — like Spider-Man swinging around New York to stop a dozen speeding cars en route to 100 percent completion — I can go back to them, put a few hours in, and check them off the list. That will be easy for some of the shorter games. I probably only have 30 minutes left of Tron: Identity and an hour or two to finish 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Dead Island 2’s Haus DLC (yes, I count DLC).
But most of the games I want to finish are a little (or a lot) bigger than that. Though the percentage I have left of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Baldur’s Gate 3 is comparable to the percentage I have left of Tron, knocking out the last five percent of a game you’ve already put over 100 hours into is a bigger task than finishing a game that's barely longer than the average movie. Similarly, I have significant time in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Alan Wake 2 and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, but still have at least half left of each.
Then there are the games I played a ton of but didn't finish for whatever reason. I started a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Mass Effect trilogy playthrough at the beginning of the year, finished the first game and half of the second, then got distracted by new games I needed to play for work. Similarly, I probably have about five hours max left of Triangle Strategy but left it incomplete heading into the new year. My rule doesn't require starting the game in 2023, just finishing it, so I could always return to my 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Uncharted 2 save from my aborted series replay I started in early 2022. That's from before I started at TheGamer, so I'd really be reaching, but if I have to fight dirty to get to 52, I will.
Quick update: since I wrote the body of this article, I have comple🌺ted two more𒀰 games: Tron: Identity and Star Fox 2. Fourteen to go.
I need to stomp the gas if I'm going to do it, though. I'm writing this on Dec. 12 and there are 31 days in the month. That leaves me with 19 days to crank through 16 games. It may be a fool's errand, but when I make my New Years' resolutions, I am a fool. A holy fool, that is, an idiotic optimist who naively expects time to warp to my will.
The realist tends to take over at some point in late October, but this year, I'm putting the fool back in the driver's seat for the final stretch. We'll see who ends up right.
