Fortnite’s inexorable push towards world domination continues. The latest figures reveal that almost half of all global Nintendo Switch owner𒐪s have downloaded the game!

It’s strange to even think it, but Fortnite began life as the plucky little battle royale. Its battle royale functionality wasn’t even the main mode, come to that, just a little side attraction. Fast-forward to today, and how the game has risen. Battle royale is the genre everyone in the industry wants a slice of just now, and Fortnite is leading the charge.

With PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds floundering a little of late (though the devs are working on their exten🎐sive project of 'fixing the game'), Fortnite is marauding around largely unchecked. Schoolchildren are playing it, world-famous athletes are playing it… it just cannot and will not be stopped. That’s not always a good thing (addiction is a real problem, and the title has supposedly contributed to 200 divorces this year in the ﷽UK), but heck, Epic Games certainly aren꧑’t𒆙 complaining.

Like a lot of the biggest games out there, Fortnite could not be ꧒contained by one system alone. It’s been a huge hit on co♕nsoles, mobile and everywhere else, and was happily adopted by Nintendo gamers when it arrived on the Switch during this year’s E3. You might be surprised at just how popular it’s been on the hybrid handheld, though.

As we just recently reported, Switch has overtaken the 🗹lifetime sales of Nintendo GameCube. Their plucky little purple funbox reached a total of 21.74 million units sold around the world during its lifetime, while Nintendo’s latest financial report reveals that Switch has just broken 22.86 million. How many of those systems have downloaded Fortnite since its release? “Nearly half,” as reports. We don't have precise figures, but that’s a staggering estimate of around 11 million Fortnite✤ players and an attachment rate that you absolutely cannot argue w𒉰ith.

Now, granted, the fact that Fortnite is a free download will have absolutely helped its case. Let’s also point out that this doesn’t mean that everybody who downloaded the game is still playing it, of course. Even so, though, this is a staggering statistic and just serves to reinforce the sheer power of the Fortnite machine.
