The population now numbers not in the hundreds but in the thousands, or even tens of thousands. Enormous industrial machines are used to carve away decades of permafrost a𒆙nd create more room to build, and rather than single buildings you’ll be zoning entire districts. Time is measured in weeks rather than days, and overall the scope of Frostpunk 2 is much more on the ma൩cro scale. The people of the City have already proven that they can survive; now they need to see if they can create a stable, permanent society. Seeing the result of their frozen blood, sweat, and tears makes the original all the more poignant.

The changes to the City’s society since the first generation of children has grown up are immediately apparent if you’ve played the first game; the Captain’s totalitarian rule has ended, and limited power has returned to the people in theꦓ form of a 100-seat Council. The player character this time around is the Steward, essentially an elected president who guides the Council’s agenda but has no vote. Managing the game’s political factions while keeping the common people happy enough not to throw you out of office is a core part of gameplay.

Politics Becomes Business As Usual

Only a few of the factions make an appearance in the demo, from trade unions like the Foragers 🐬and Mechanics to the hardliner Icebloods. Even with just a few, it’s impossible to please everyone; while the Captain had to deal with a 🅷few dozen dissidents here and there, the Steward can find organized rallies and protests cropping up across the City if even a single faction feels they aren’t being heard.

The City ha🍸s developed a heat-based economy; Heat Stamps are issued as pay to workers, which act as currency and are exchanged for fuel. Many of your construction efforts will be funded by Heat Stamps, collected in weekly taxes from the populace… assuming they’re not withholding them in protest.

Even I found it to be an acquired taste, and I love challenges and tragedy in equal measure. While Frostpunk 2 can be just as heart-wrenching, its gameplay could click for some players in a way that the original didn’t. The City’s districts fit together almost like a puzzle, and the Council adds a Machiavellian layer as you wrangle votes with threats and promises. Frostpunk 2 could very well be the Aliens of city builders, offering plenty of reasons to pick up the sequel, even if you didn&rsquo⛎;t care for the original.

With its zoomed-out focus on the big picture, Frostpunk 2 is a completely different game from Frostpunk, and that’s a good thing. Just as the game’s world has changed, so did the City’s needs and its approach to survival. It’s shaping up to be a fascinating next chapter in the story of an engrossing, immersive setting; one that I imagine could go on evolving with each successive title for a lon𝔍g time.
