In the realm of primal fears, we often find that seemingly innocent things can actually be incredibly unsettling. Some characters or 👍toys just look a little too happy. Others just look uncanny, like they are not completely what they seem to try to be.
This actually makes some video game characters popular. We love to be scared, and its especially funny when the scary character is unintentional. Here are ten characters that were not intended to scare us, but theꦛy did anyway.
10 𒁃 Ball Guy From Pokémon Sword And Shield
The newest character on the block is Ball Guy from Pokémon Sword And Shield. He is one of those characters that falls into the "too happy" category. Not only that, but he is a mascot. Sword and Shield makes battles a lot like sports games, and Ball Guy is the mascot of these games. Most peopl⛦e do not like mascots because we have the uncomfortable knowledg🗹e that that is a real man or woman in a mask.
While we appre♓ciate the free stuff he gives us, Ball Guy did make a lot of trainers uncom🌄fortable before their Gym challenges.
9 ☂ Tingle From The Legend Of Zelda
Both in design and personality, Tingle is a total creep. Despite this though, he is actually a very popular character in Japan. He first appeared in Majora's Mask, which was intentionally a more dark game in the Legend of Zelda series. H🦹owever, Tingle stuck a♒round and even got some of his own games.
It seems it is mostly American audiences that find this character most unsettling. In fact, that is why he never made an appearance in Twilight Princess.
8 Unagi The Eel From Super ✨Mario 🐼64
These eels remained creepy since their first appearance in Super Mario 64 and to their latest appearance in Super Mario Odyssey. It takes some effort to make an eel even more upsetting to look at than a shark, but Nintendo managed to do just that﷽.
From their soulless eyes to their sharp teeth, it is no wonder that players fr⭕eaked out at the sight of the🌃se sea creatures.
7 ﷽ Blinx Fr൲om Blinx The Time Sweeper
It's a major concern for a g﷽ame when its the protagonist themselves that ends up being unintentionally creepy. Poor Blinx.
Cats typically make for cute characters, but that was not the case for this feline with a freaky face that terrified players. 💟The smile is actually nightmarish, as if he is a monster instead of an actual cat.
6 Amꦍigo From Samba De Amigo
This monkey's creepiness is all in the eyes and smile. It is like one of those freaky clapping monkey toys. He is too happy and it's like he knows something you don't. The eyes are total voids as well. The 🌞best adjective to use for his smile is "demented."
Would you keep a poster of this character in your room? Most would answer with a "pleꩲase,𓂃 no."
5 ✤ Yellow Monkey From Ape Escape 2
What sometimes comes off as cha🌼rming actually ends up coming off as utterly unsettling. That was the case for Yellow Monkey, who is in a game tha🌠t tries to be cute and goofy. First of all, the eyes are a mistake. Oh yes, they are a mistake.
The character is creepy for the same reason a lot of people think clowns are scary. 🍨Its bright colors are off-putting, and its belly button is kind of gross looking. To make matters worse, this creepy character is enormous so you have to look at 💛it.
4 Some Villagers From 𒐪Animal Crossing ༺
The creepiness of Animal Crossing villagers have become somewhat of a funny meme for a while. What makes their creepiness so funny is that they are from one of the most innocent games out there▨. All you do is pay off your debt to a raccoon.
However, the protagonist has a soulless doll-like face. It reads as though they are not afraid of anything, but in a creepy way. They are always smiling, and players cannot help but thinಌk that the villager could be one of the most secretly brutal characters out there. Some look creepier than others, depending on the design.
3 ☂ Merrill From Dragon Age 2
Sorry Merrill, but it's true. Between her innocent-seeming personality and her blood magic, Merrill is definitely the creepiest Dragon Age companion. Her des꧅ign has huge doll-like eyes, and her voice sounds very child-like. Her banter is child-like too, as she is pretty naive about the world outside her clan.
However, she practices the most dangerous form of ma✃gic and keeps a demon-mirror in her house. She is one of those sweet 𝄹characters that you cannot help but be afraid of because if she snaps, it'll be the worst day of everyone's life. The woman is not afraid to make deals with demons.
2 Everyone In L.A. Noire ꦯ
This game shows up on a lot of other lists for its unintentionally creepy characters. This is because L.A. Noire was made back when faci🌳al recognition graphics were still in the realm of uncanny valley.
The characters in the game are supposed to give the player facial cues when they are lying. This is what makes them all sc🌳ary though, as their faces really get uncanny and strange. It's like they are robots trying to pass for a human, as their eyes are dead and their movements a🐷re off-putting.
1 🐭 Clanker From Banjo-Kazooie 👍
Clanker is upsetting for a lot of the same reasons as Unagi the Eel from Super Mario 64. Despite Banjo-Kazooie being humorous, colorful, and charming, Clanker existed. He looks like a rusted shark out of a dystopian horror film. He has a blowhole like a whale though, s𒀰o he may not even be a shark.
Personality-wise, Clanker isꦗ actually nice. He was just cursed with a body meant for a different genre. The♏ worst part is that you actually have to swim inside him in the game. That takes a lot of trust when you stare into his frightening eyes.
