Every once in a while, video game developers like to throw curve balls at us keeping us on our toes. Sure, at this point we expect Isaac Clarke to head up the next Dead Space entry, but if we're talking about a continuation of Metal Gear Solid, all bets are off on Solid Snake being the lead.

Video games often thrust you into the shoes of a fated protagonist essentially creating a symbiotic bond with your avatar. That's why it can be somewhat jarring when a follow-up game employs a different protagonist than what we're used to, even if it was expected.

8 🍎 Prototype 2 🌠

James Heller In Prototype 2

The original Prototype is an explosive anti-hero-style romp that is all about Alexꩵ Mercer, a shape-shifting weapon of mass slaughter. Infected with the Blacklight Virus, he combats the conspiring element that extends to the military as he learns more about his past. He ultimately helps save Manhattan from annihilation.

Prototype 2 puts you in the shoes of Sergeant James Heller of the U.S. Marine Corps. Upon his return from a tour overseas, he learns his wife and daughter are dead thanks to the spread of the Blacklight infection. He confronts Alex, the cause of its spread, and becomes infected with Alex's strain transforming him into the same superhuman. Alex then becomes the central villain of the sequel wishing to wipe out all of humanity. What a twist, huh?

7 🍷 Metal G🐬ear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty

Raiden and Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 2 pointing guns

168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Metal Gear Solid fans long remember the bait-and-switch they experienced with the release of Hideo Kojima's much-anticipated sequel to the PlayStation classic. The first chunk of the game starts earnestly enough as you once again embody Solid Snake, the legendary stealth operative from the first game.

With the demo featuring Solid Snake and the game's box art cover solely featuring the character, you'd expect Snake to be the primary playable character. However, after just an hour or two into the game, everything changes, and you take on the role of green operative Raiden who is dispatched by Foxhound and a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:creepy AI Colonel to rescue the U.S. president from the Sons of Liberty. Snake becomes integ🔯ral to the story, but fans were dismayed that he was hardly playable.

Are you still here? Alright then, you know where this is going. We understood, that Ellie would take a much more interactive role in this sequel prior to its release. What we didn't know is that 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Joel would be savagely murdered in the game's opening moments. The man you controlled in your trek across the U.S. in the first game is summarily executed by newcomer Abby in a pivotal upset at the start of the sequel, setting Ellie down the path of revenge.

5 🐈 Devil May Cry 4 ꦕ

Nero in Devil May Cry 4

Two decades ago, Capcom introduced us to the half-devil demon slayer with a swagger too cool for school that is Dante. He headlined a trilogy of games before taking a partial backseat in the fourth entry. While Dante does become playable in the second half of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Devil May Cry 4, the fi൩rst half of the game is hi♔jacked by newcomer Nero.

What became so strange about Nero's entrance into the DMC saga is that he has the likeness of Dante with ashen hair and demonic power to boot. It's like the game-makers wanted to ease us into a shift away from Dante by making this new protagonist look just like him. We later learned in Devil May Cry 5, however, that 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Dante is Nero's uncle, hence the familial resemblance.

4 ♓ Red D💖ead Redemption 2

Arthur Morgan pointing a gun in Red Dead Redemption 2

Despite having a '2' in its title, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel by nature💖. From a chronological perspective, that bodes well for fans of John Marston, the protagonist of the first game, considering he died badly at the end of that story.

But instead, John Marston takes a back seat as a supporting character (and will later be playable in the epilogue). The central narrative of Red Dead Redemption 2 focuses on Arthur Morgan, another member of the Van Der Linde gang alongside Marston himself. Players get to control Arthur's story and watch as he ultimately seeks the redemption the series title promises.

3 Infamous Second Sꦍon

Delsin Rowe looking at his hands in Infamous Second Son

Fans of the PS3 duology of Infamous titles are familiar with Cole MacGrath and his superhuman power. In fact, it was truly the best superhero (or villain) video game we had received prior to the advent of Rocksteady's Arkham series or Insomniac's Spider-Man.

Depending on one's perception, Infamous 2 ended definitively with Cole's death. Though the "good" ending saw an ambiguous sign of a lightning strike out at sea as a possible hint that Cole was still alive. Infamous Second Son introduces players to an entirely new protagonist leaving Cole behind in the series' history. You control Delsin Rowe a conduit who survived the Ray Field Inhibitor killing most conduits at the end of Infamous 2. He is being hunted down as a bioterrorist in this new storyline.

2 W🙈ඣolfenstein: Youngblood

Jesse and Zofia Blazkowicz in Wolfenstein Youngblood

168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Wolfenstein is a long-running series that actually began as a side-scrolling adventurꦦe long before it became a fღirst-person shooter. When id Software did finally place you in the boots of B.J. Blazkowicz in Wolfenstein 3D, it was a bloody affair to remember. Now, fast-forward a few decades and several entries later. The Wolfenstein franchise is going strong with Machine Games at the helm.

Wolfenstein: The New Order reintroduced us to B.J. and his Nazi-killing ways. He even, once again, took the fight directly to Hitler in Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. But in Wolfenstein: Youngblood, you no longer control the fabled Nazi-killer the series is known for. In fact, you control one of his two daughters in a potential co-op experience. Youngblood wasn't entirely well-received. The rigid dialogue and RPG elements simply weren't welcome in the franchise, and players missed B.J.

1 ꧙ 🦄 Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Adam Jensen smoking in Deus Ex Human Revolution

Like Red Dead Redemption 2, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Deus Ex: Human Revolution is actually a prequel to the original game. The original 2000 title, Deus Ex, followed JC Denton in the year 2052 who investigates a conspiracy as an agent for the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition. Seeing as how this is set in the technologically-advanced future, D🐻enton has inhuman abilities granted through the use of nanotechnology.

Human Revolution introduces you to Adam Jensen, an operative for Sarif Industries in 2027. The series maintains its cyberpunk aesthetic as Jensen is outfitted with cyborg augmentations in an effort to save his life after sustaining serious injuries during a terrorist attack on Sarif. Jensen's story is continued in another sequel titled Deus Ex: Mankind Divided making him the new primary mascot for the series.
