The first sequel to one of෴ the most ဣgroundbreaking games ever made, The Lost Levels followed the same formula as Super Mario Bros. in terms of concept, level desꦬign, and presentation. What set it apart from the original though was the ridiculous spike in difficulty.
Complex level design meant that there was little to no room for error; and with the addition of items like the poison mushroom, which can be mistaken for the originaꦬl mushroom, players were greeted witꦇh the game over screen on a regular basis.

The F-Zero series was one of th𝓡e most popular racing franchises for Nintendo consoles. Set in the 24th century, pilots must race each other in highly powered hover crafts. The premise is that thes𒆙e races are deadly, with a variety of obstacles and landmines meaning that one false move and the player is finished.
No game in the series lived up to this mantra more than F-Zero: GX. Its track design and high octane speed meant that track memorization and flawless handling were required just to finish th🎃e story and unlock all the tracks.

Another commonality that the two games share is the intensity of their boss battles. Bloodborne has a variety of hulki🗹ng behemoths that are hell-bent on destroying you. Only through perseverance and studying these monsters can you hope to beat this punishing game.

Death is♍ mo﷽re often than not the consequence of failing a video game. In fact, every game on this list (except one) will see you perish often before you’ve completed them, if you even do.
However, no game sees you expire more than this one, which has garnered a reputation for the frequency of its protagonist’s demise, often numbering in the tens of thousands. Controlli﷽ng a boy literally made out of meat in this 2D side-scroller, it won't be long befo𒉰re you’re incinerated, impaled, squished, and shredded over and over again.
5 ༺ Ninja Gaiden ဣ
Speaking of horrendous gaming violence: when Ninja Gaiden was released for the Xbox in 2004 it set a new 🐟standard for third-person hack ‘n’ slash gameplay as well as game design. What it also did was set a new standard for difficulty in the genre.

What made this game so challenging was the unpredictabl🐠e patterns of attack utilized by the enemy A.I., meaning that even getting to Tyson was extremely daunting. Fittingly, if you managed to make it that far, Tyson was the father of all bosses, swarming the player with a barrage of pugilistic brutality. Would you want to box Tyson for a second time?!

A notorious run-and-gun side-scroller, Contra makes this list not just for its difficulty, but for how severely it punishes you for failing. Cont🥃ra has a one-hit death system: meaning that if you touch an enemy or get struck by a single bullet, that’s it for you.
Now, that’s daunting enough given that it's a 2D shooter with li📖mited places to hide, but if you consider the fact that you’re only given three lives on top of that, it makes it especially cruel.

You're given a total o♒f six hit points which, in fairness, can be replenished by eating flies. The really daunting thing about this game is the fact that you cannot save your progress — at all. This adds an extra layer of stress to an already stressful experience.

Here's another 2D side-scroller (seeing a pattern here?). In this one, players control a knight by the ꦫname of Sir Arthur on his quest to rescue ൲Princess Prin-Prin. To do so you must slash your way through a variety of zombies and monsters.
Sounds romantic and virtuous, right? Well, not when you consider 🍬that you can only take two hits before having to restart the level. Oh, and after you defeat the final boss, you have to play it again on a higher difficulty to face the “real” final boss. Are you up for it, oh brave kꦅnight?
