The Search For Albedo

Genshin Impact Albedo explaining to paimon and traveler

Uncovering the secrets of Albedo's past all started with Paimon having a craving for fresh fruit. She asked Timaeus, the Scholar of Alchemy found in Mondstadt, if he could create a machine to keep fruit fresh indefinitely. Both he and Sucrose, who was talking to him at the time, suggest asking Albedo. This sparks a journey to Dragonspine that reveals more than expected.

The Dragonspine Adventurer Camp is packed when they arrive, since Cyrus is hosting an event for the Adventurer's Guild to help them train in survival skills in a controlled environment. The crowd includes Amber, who has come to accompany Joel, and Eula whom she invited. They are soon joined by a new adventurer named Gerald, who Eula accompanies when it transpires that his instructor has not arrived.

Traveler and Paimon break off to catch up with Amber and Joel, running into Albedo along the way. He tells them he's looking for Starsilver to use in a painting. Paimon is incredibly distracted by this idea and asks if Albedo can teach Traveler some painting basics. He agrees, and the trio set off back to his camp.

Upon returning they discover that the place has been trashed, with some of Albedo's notes missing and visible footprints leading off into the distance. After pursuing the thief, Albedo asks them to stay outside as he ventures into a cave. Encouraged by Paimon, Traveler steps briefly away to collect some Starsilver, before coming face to face with Albedo who is just leaving the cavern and says he lost the thief. Suddenly, a cry for help sends them running across the lake.

The screams originate from Bennett, who has got himself captured by the Fatui. After freeing him, Paimon and Traveler realize that Albedo has disappeared. They return to the cavern to look for him, only to spot him emerging from the darkness, asking why they left before he came back out. However, there's no time to answer him before the trio are joined by Eula, who accuses Albedo of attacking her. She says that while training Gerald she confronted Albedo after seeing him taking Joel to the dangerous wastelands. He left Joel before turning on her then fleeing when she fought back.

Albedo's Double?

Genshin Impact two albedos

A shocked Albedo concludes that someone must be impersonating him, likely the same person who stole his notes. After Paimon and Traveler vouch for Albedo's whereabouts for most of that time, Eula hesitantly accepts the suggestion. Just then Amber arrives, looking for Bennett. Eula accompanies Amber as she escorts both Joel and Bennett back to camp, leaving Traveler and Paimon alone with Albedo.

As the trio go back to Albedo's camp to clean up he makes a confession that explains the confusion. Albedo is a synthetic human. He was created by Rhinedottir, also known as Gold, a researcher from Khaenri'ah, an underground nation which fell during the cataclysm. Rhinedottir was a practitioner of the Art of Khemia, an alchemy branch that focuses on the creation of life, and is the only known practitioner to have succeeded in creating viable synthetic life.

Rhinedottir primarily created monsters, many of which were responsible for atrocities committed during the cataclysm. However, she also crafted two♌ "miraculous beings." The first was Durin, a shadow dragon who harnessed the power of the Abyss and unleashed it on Mondstadt, before he was slain by Dvalin, also known as Stormterror. The second was Albedo.

Albedo Confronts Albedo

Genshin Impact Albedo stabs albedo

A few days later Albedo is given the chance to confront his double after a suspicious avalanche threatens a group including Traveler, Paimon, Amber, Eula and Bennett. Traveler is on edge after noticing that the 'Albedo' in their group seems off, but it is Albedo himself who saves the day, stabbing the fake from behind after he turns on Eula. The imposter vanishes, revealing a mutant whopperflower that the group defeats.

Albedo explains that this mutation was likely due to corruption from Durin's poisonous blood, which was spilled over Dragonspine during the cataclysm. Whopperflowers imitate plants, but this one has imitated a human, empowered by the corruption in the area and a desire to infiltrate the group.

After the encounter Albedo explains to Traveler and Paimon that the star-shaped mark on his neck, which he likens to a birthmark, is due to his synthetic status and can be used to identify him. Paimon and Traveler also learn more about Rhinedottir's "abandoned experiment," that occurred between her two successful ones. It was a human similar to Albedo, that she deemed a failure before feeding him to Durin.

After Paimon and Travel leave, Albedo comes to realize that the chaos is actually being caused by the failed creation, likely released when Durin perished over Dragonspine. After spotting this Primordial version of himself, he goes off to confront him, later recounti🧸ng the events in the form of a cryptic story that the😼 Traveler decodes.

Theories About Primordial Albedo

Genshin Impact Albedo talks to larger group

Albedo has so far failed to reveal what happened to his clone, except to clarify that his plan to usurp Albedo's identity failed. However, there are three major theories.

Primordial Albedo Is Dead

Primordial Albedo was slain byꦯ Albedo as we saw, and the story he tells is part of the prank he plays when he makes his birthmark vanish to unsettle Traveler.

Primordial Albedo Has Assumed Joserf's Identity

Joserf is the father of Joel, who vanished in Dragonspine leaving behind his son. Albedo found out about Joel's situation during this time and 'Joserf' was found conveniently lacking memories shortly after Albedo was said to have confronted his other self. Primordial Albedo assuming his identity makes a lot of sense since it allows Joel to have his father back, while also fulfilling Primodrial Albedo's desire to live among humans as Albedo does.

Primodial Albedo Shares His Identity With Albedo

Thi🍌s final theory suggests that the pair both li𝔍ve as Albedo, changing who appears in public. This is why sometimes Albedo can appear "off" during certain events.
