As E3 continues to fade in relevance, it seems as if another nail in the coffin has been added to its casket. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, industry pundit Geoff Keighley announced that he won't be attending E3 this year. This is a hu⭕ge shock as he recently started producing E3 Coliseum and has attended every show in the event's 25-year history.
"Given what has been publicly communicated about plans for E3 2020, I just don't feel comfortable participating in the show at this time," Keighley told the publicatiওon. "I saw the E3 website leak this AM and said, 'You know what, I really need to let people know what to expect from m✱e, so no one is disappointed.' This certainly wasn't an easy decision to make, but I think it's the right one for me."
Keighley also account that reit✱erated what he told GamesIndustry.biz. He stresses that he'll be finding other avenues for supporting the industry in ways that feel more in line with what he held on Steam during The Game Awards. "I'm always open to conversations with game publishers and partners about ways to evolve how we come together for industry events," Keighley said to GamesIndustry.biz. "No matter what, it's really important that we get everyone to participate in these events. That's something I'll look forward to doing at places like Gamescom and The Game Awards."
With Sony not attending E3 and now Geoff Keighley backing out, it seems the show is losing some of its most important representation. Microsoft's Phil Spencer has made a note to say Xbox will be present at the show, but with one of the big three absent, the show doesn't feel the same. Even E3 2019 felt a little hollow with the lack of Sony despite Nintendo housing a relat🦂ively large booth.
One also can't forget how the that attended the event last year. The ESA needs to seriously reconsider what it wants E3 to be before the show completely vanishes. The name is important, but the way the event is currently held isꦉ not going to last for much longer.
