's free Valhalla DLC makes it painfully clear how much Kratos misses Atreus, as his journal entries show a much more emotional side to his character.
Before God of War Ragnarok launched, a lot of fans expected to see a sad🎃 endi😼ng that resulted in either the death of Kratos or Atreus (something that was spurred on by a mural found at the end of the 2018 game). That didn't end up happening, but Ragnarok's conclusion was no less bittersweet as it saw Kratos and Atreus separating from one another to go on their own adventures and discover who they are individually.

After Valhalla, What's Next For God Of War?
Valhalla is more of an extensioꦚn to God of War Ragnarok than a follow-up, and the series still has to decide what a sequel looks like
During the epilogue of the main game, Kratos does indicate that he's sad about Atreus leaving by mentioning him as he, Freya, and Mimir adventure throughout the realms and clear things up, but he seems mostly happy for his son's decision. In the new free expansion for Ragnarok, titled Valhalla, we get a deeper look into how much Kratos misses Atreus thanks to some new journal entries.
You might remember that in God of War, Atreus kept a journal that could be read by the player, something that was then followed up with Kratos doing the same in Raganrok. Well, for Valhalla, Kratos' penmanship skills return and he continues to fill out a journal that recaps events, enemies, and characters.
Atreus also had his own journal entries for when you played as him during God of War Ragnarok. ✨Like father, like son.
Only, this time there's a bit of a difference to Kratos' writing. , Kratos makes several mentions of his son through the journal entries and almost seems to be writing them to him, possibly as letters that he one day sends to him. For example, the journal entry for the Dreki, enemies fought in Ragnarok, has Kratos saying, "Without you, the fight is harder... but our way of finishing the beast together is what I miss the most".
Another entry, which focuses on Mimir, has Kratos saying, "I am grateful for Mimir's company, never more so than now, without you". Kratos even talks to his son when he's experiencing things from his past, like when he encounters the head of Helios and writes, "I never told you of Helios... I am glad you will never have to meet him".
